Preview: Villarreal - Mallorca

Mallorca will be desperately seeking some vital points when they visit Villarreal on Saturday night.

Descending Submarine

It is not that long ago that lying in sixth place was a major achievement for a club as “small” as Villarreal. In recent times, however, their rapid progress has raised ambitions, and this season has taken a disappointing turn of late. Having been thought of as one of the clubs most likely to challenge for the title, the Yellow Submarine are now battling to stay in a European place.

Villarreal got off to a spectacular start to the season, and were soon the only side able to keep pace with Barcelona. As whispers of a title chase began, however, their campaign hit the rocks. They are now without a win in five games, and the fact that four of those were against their immediate challengers suggests that any talk of silverware was highly optimistic.

Last week saw Villarreal visit Valencia for a highly charged local derby, and within ten minutes they were two goals down. They rallied admirably to equalize twice, but in the end the 3-3 all draw embodied Villarreal’s season so far: extremely entertaining, but woefully inconsistent.

Heading Down

This season has been a horror story for Mallorca, both on and off the pitch. This week they “welcomed” a new president, Mateo Alemany, back to the club where he once reigned supreme. He takes charge of a club desperate for investment, and a team in 19th place on the table.

As with many of the struggling sides, a poor defense is to blame. Only the promoted sides, Sporting Gijon and Numancia, have conceded more, but unlike Mallorca, they have found ways to score enough goals to escape the drop zone. The islanders have netted only 18 times so far, less than everyone except Espanyol and Recreativo de Huelva, who occupy the two places immediately above them.

If Mallorca are to avoid a potentially catastrophic drop to La Segunda, they must improve their away form, which has seen them pick up a solitary win. In the league, they are without a victory in eight games, and it is highly unlikely that they will pick up the elusive three points at El Madrigal.

TEAM NEWS

Villarreal

The main injury concern for Manuel Pellegrini is Nihat Kahveci, who will be out for a month having just returned from injury.

Probable Starting XI - Diego López - Ángel, Gonzalo, Godín, Capdevila - Cazorla, Bruno, Eguren, Ibagaza - Rossi, Llorente

Mallorca

Josemi, Fernando Varela and Aritz Aduriz all return from suspension, while keeper Miguel Moyá is still out with a long term injury.

Probable Starting XI - Aouate - Scaloni, Ramis, Nunes, Navarro - Corrales, Martí, Cléber Santana, Suaréz - Arango - Webó

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Villarreal - Joseba Llorente is back from injury and already scoring goals, with his tally currently on 10. Given Nihat’s newest setback, the pressure will be on Llorente to continue banging them in.

Mallorca - Five goals so far is not enough for a striker with the talent of Aritz Aduriz. His sublime strike against Barcelona proved that he belongs at this level, and he will have to score more if Mallorca are to avoid the drop. A lack of support, however, is a major problem.

PREDICTION

Villarreal may be the most inconsistent team in the league, but Mallorca are simply hopeless away from home. The new year has shown no signs of an improvement, so the Yellow Submarines should walk away with this one.
