Aston Villa are trying to sign Swedish Euro 2000 star Joachim Björklund - as they prepare to sell Ugo Ehiogu.

Centre half Björklund has flown in from Valencia to discuss personal terms about a £3 million (€4.8m) switch to Villa Park.

The former Rangers defender is available at Valencia, where he is keen to move after being snubbed and left out of the Champions League final.

Björklund is a ready-made replacement for Ehiogu, who is a £6.5 million (€10.4m) target for Manchester City, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

The 29-year-old speaks perfect English and can also play in Villa's back three, two factors in favour of the deal going ahead.

Meanwhile Villa are trying to sort out the 50 per cent sell-on clause they have in the Ehiogu deal that could cost them over £3 million (€4.8m).

Manchester City are just waiting for permission to talk to Ehiogu after admitting their interest yesterday. Both Sunderland and Boro are also waiting in the wings.

I agree that Bjorklund is a good defender and are also very fast but now that Alpay from Turkey came i cant see this transfer to get real. If Aston Villa buys him it will be a great adition to the club.
