Veron eyes Juve switch with Nesta

Tuesday 28th May 2002

Manchester United star Juan Sebastian Veron has hinted that he could link up with his former Lazio colleague Alessandro Nesta at Juventus amid speculation that the Turin club is about to land the two World Cup stars.

"I would be not surprised to have Nesta as a team-mate again," he said.

Veron, who is in Japan with the Argentina squad, said he was flattered by the interest from Juventus, and would make a decision on his future after the World Cup.

"It's a great honour to know that Juventus are looking at me," he said. "It's natural to think that. Juventus are one of the most important clubs in the world.

"First of all, though, I have to think to the World Cup and the first game against Nigeria. When this adventure with Argentina is finished, at the end of June, I will consider my personal future."

Veron struggled to adapt in his first season in the Premiership, and may have even alienated his staunchest supporter, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, with his recent comment that he preferred the less aggressive management style of his former Lazio coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The £28 million-midfielder has long been rumoured to be on the verge of a return to Italy, while Nesta has been at loggerheads with Lazio over his own future.

Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti has told him there are no offers on the table, but Nesta claims the club are trying to sell him behind his back.

A stumbling block to any move is the huge transfer fee Lazio would demand, but it is reported in Italy that Juve's bid will include Marcelo Zalayeta and Matteo Brighi, plus £20 million.

Veron certainly believes Lazio are gearing up to sell their captain. "In football anything can happen," he said. "In the last seasons, Lazio sold important players like me and Christian Vieri, and I should be not surprised to have Nesta as a team-mate in Juventus."

Meanwhile, whatever his own future, the Argentinian said he did not regret the move to Old Trafford. "I was only hindered by injuries, but the English fans will see the real Veron at the World Cup," he added.

I'm so mad right now:mad: :fero:  :fero:
