Soccer legend Valdano hurt in Mexico chopper crash

MEXICO CITY, March 25 (Reuters) - Argentine soccer great Jorge Valdano was injured along with seven others in a helicopter crash in Mexico City on Saturday, police said.

The helicopter crashed in a street in the capital's business district, but police said there were no casualties.

All six passengers, along with the pilot and co-pilot, were taken to hospital.

"Among the passengers was Argentine Jorge Valdano, the former professional soccer player," said Gabriel Regino, deputy public security chief for Mexico City, at the scene.

"They are stable, conscious, with injuries -- possibly one of them seriously hurt, but it's not Valdano," he added.

The cause of the accident was not clear.

Valdano, 50, for many a soccer legend, was part of the Argentine team that won the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. He later went on to coach Real Madrid and eventually became the club's sporting director in 2000. He resigned last year.

Mexico City - A helicopter crashed in a stylish corner of Mexico's capital on Saturday, injuring Argentine soccer star Jorge Valdano and seven others, none gravely.

The private helicopter went down in the Lomas de Chapultepec district, damaging a parked car and causing all eight aboard to be hospitalized, according to the federal Public Safety Department.

Valdano played with Diego Maradona on the Argentine soccer team that won the World Cup here in 1986 and was later coach of Spain's Real Madrid team. Valdano also works as a TV sports commentator.

Doctors told local radio stations that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

Formato 21 radio reported that the helicopter left a landing pad atop the Four Seasons Hotel along Mexico City's central Paseo de la Reforma boulevard and was headed to Toluca, 55 kilometres west of the capital.

Firefighters were called to the crash scene to control fuel pouring from the aircraft, which broke into pieces before settling on its left side, Formato 21 said.

Valdano Undergoes Surgery

Overcomes Punctured Lung and in Satisfactory Condition

• Agencia EFE

Jorge Valdano was involved in a helicopter accident in Mexico on Saturday. According to press agency Agencia EFE, he underwent surgery to repair a punctured lung and is now recovering in his hospital room.

On Sunday, ABC hospital in Mexico City reported that former Real Madrid player and coach, Jorge Valdano is recovering satisfactorily after undergoing surgery to drain a punctured lung suffered in Saturday's helicopter accident. The hospital reported that Valdano's punctured lung had to be "surgically repaired" in order to drain all the blood it had accumulated. He is in "satisfactory condition but will remain hospitalized and under observation for several days" to avoid any complications, explained the hospital. The medical report stated that Valdano "had broken his first and eighth rib and suffered a punctured lung, allowing blood and air to escape through the thoracic cavity."

"There is no more blood remaining in his lung and he is in satisfactory condition. He's in a good mood and would like to send his regards to all his friends here in Mexico. He is also very appreciative for all the attention he has received. His prognosis is very satisfactory," stated the hospital.

It is unknown how many days the former player will remain hospitalized, although, depending on his recuperation, the medical staff hopes he can be released as soon as next weekend. The helicopter accident occurred on Saturday morning in a residential neighbourhood of Mexico City. The eight passengers were hurt and one passed away hours later due to complications.

Valdano 'very satisfactory' after crash

Monday, 27 March 2006

Jorge Valdano, the former Real Madrid CF striker and sporting director, is continuing his recovery after a helicopter crash in Mexico on Saturday.

The 50-year-old needed surgery after suffering internal bleeding and several broken ribs in an accident that left one dead and seven other passengers injured.

"His condition is very satisfactory, but he will have to remain here for several days to recover fully," a doctor said.

Valdano had to have another minor surgery today to remove the blood that was between his lungs and his ribs.

At the end, he has 11 broken ribs, and all the fractures are close to the column, which is causing him great discomfort.

He´s still in the ICU and is only allowed to receive visits for 30 minutes a day, and a person at a time. His wife Marta, his mom and Santi Segurola are the ones there with him.

Valdano said the helicopter never flew, that it crashed from a 20th floor as it was trying to take off.
