US Open Cup: A-League squads prepare to assault the MLS
News Archive
Diaz Arce and his new mates in Charleston will be looking to wreak havoc on the Rapids (AllSport)
06/28/2002. The 89th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2nd round finished this week, with 8 A-League teams advancing to the 3rd round to face the 8 MLS teams. Players like Raul Diaz Arce, who has scored 82 goals while playing 6 years in the MLS. Diaz Arce will be leading the Charleston Battery against his former teammates from a year ago, the Colorado Rapids. The Battery boasts the best record in the A-league at the moment and will up to the task to show the world that they are the Class of the A-league. The Rapids have been doing pretty well themselves, but they have one great weakness, playing on the road. Diaz Arce and the Battery will be hoping to take full advantage of that weakness. The San Jose Earthquakes will also play a tough road match against a determined Seattle Sounder team in Seattle's Memorial stadium. The Sounders have the 2nd best record in the A-League and will be looking to knock off the MLS Champs. The Earthquakes are the class of the MLS and will be looking to show the Sounders that they can get rocked, like the rest of the Quakes opponents.
The Rochester Raging Rhinos will begin their quest for a 2nd US Open Cup, by hosting the Kansas City Wizards. The Wizards have had some troubles with scoring, but unbelievably the Wizards still have a chance for a Treble. Of course no one in Bob Gansler's camp is talking out loud about the fact, but when the ref sounds his whistle to start that match in Rochester, look for the Wizards to conjure something terrible for the Rhinos. The matches will commence on Wednesday, July 17th. The rest of the fixtures are listed below.
2002 US Open Cup Third Round Matches:
Richmond Kickers at Columbus Crew
NY/NJ MetroStars at Hampton Roads Mariners
Colorado Rapids at Charleston Battery
Chicago Fire at Milwaukee Rampage
Kansas City Wizards at Rochester Raging Rhinos
Dallas Burn at Atlanta Silverbacks
Los Angeles Galaxy at Minnesota Thunder
San Jose Earthquakes at Seattle Sounders
