Serie A Week 16 - 19/12/04 (15.00)
Udinese - Lazio

Stadio Friuli

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lazio boss Mimmo Caso is under great pressure to keep his job, so a trip to in-form Udinese is not a welcome tie. The Bianconeri are flying high in third-place right now, while the capital outfit are sliding down the table following a very promising start to the campaign.

Luciano Spalletti’s side won again last week when they sneaked a 1-0 at Atalanta. Vincenzo Iaquinta scored a good goal but the team performed well as a unit, which isn’t surprising when you consider that they have won seven and drawn two out of their last nine matches.

Lazio had to thank Paolo Di Canio for rescuing them a point in the 3-3 with Lecce. The veteran scored a brace but that still may not be enough to see him win a starting shirt at the Stadio Friuli. Zauri, Negro, Muzzi and Siviglia remain doubts because of fitness.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Bertotto, Sensini, Felipe; Alberto, Pizarro, Muntari; Jankulovski, Di Michele, Iaquinta, Di Natale

Lazio (probable): Peruzzi; Oddo, Talamonti, Lequi, Lopez; Giannichedda, Dabo; A. Filippini, Pandev, Rocchi; Inzaghi

they are one of the most on-form and talented teams of A. A draw will be a very good result.

I am not being realistic...I am being pessimistic...as usual. ;) But the tradition is firmly on our side, in the last years we beat Udinese all the time...so maybe it's time for them to demolish us let's say 5:0 or something. Or maybe we will actually play well for a change and get a result.

No way will, or should, Caso be the Lazio after the christmas break.

By the way, the new coach will have the derby for his first match.

HT and 3-0 down. :wallbang: Maybe Lazio can pull yet another comeback out of the hat, like last time, and manage a draw, but I doubt it.

Spalletti doubts Lazio slump

Udinese are favourites to win this afternoon, but Luciano Spalletti thinks rumours of Lazio’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

“They are a tough nut to crack,” insisted the ex-Empoli tactician ahead of the Stadio Friuli encounter that could see Coach Mimmo Caso sacked.

“With the quality of players they have in their squad, an opponent must always be wary of predicting any kind of result.”

Third-placed Udinese are flying high with three consecutive victories, while the Capital club has picked up one point in its last three games.
Spalletti doubts Lazio slump

“Lazio’s problems are caught up in the rush with which the squad was thrown together in the final weeks of the transfer market,” added Spalletti.

“You cannot deny that players like Ousmane Dabo, Giuliano Giannichedda, Fernando Couto, Luciano Zauri and Paolo Di Canio can decide a match at any moment.”

There are some injury worries for the Friuli side, as Marek Jankulovski is a major doubt to start after picking up a bruise during Thursday’s friendly test. If the Czech international is unable to recover in time, then his place will be taken by Stefano Mauri.

Lazio boss Mimmo Caso knew he faced the sack if he didn't win this match, but it was a tough ask as Udinese were flying high in third place thanks to three consecutive victories. His side did what it could considering it was reduced to ten men after just seven minutes.

Former Friuli hero Roberto Muzzi missed the chance to play against his old teammates due to an injury with both goalkeepers Angelo Peruzzi and Matteo Sereni ruled out, so Casazza made his first Serie A start in three years.

Lazio have a terrible disciplinary record this season and they were forced to play 83 minutes in ten men after Sebastiano Siviglia hacked down Vincenzo Iaquinta as he was running towards the net.

From the resulting free kick Iaquinta slammed the ball into the net, but the referee had already whistled for a push in the wall.

The Biancocelesti were furious soon after when the referee pointed to the spot, as David Di Michele fell under the slightest of touches from Antony Seric. It was an extremely debatable penalty, but David Pizarro's effort had to be taken twice due to encroachment.

Lazio had the chance to draw level when Tommaso Rocchi sprung the offside trap, but some brave goalkeeping from Morgan De Sanctis forced him out wide.

However, Di Michele was more effective as he took advantage of a defensive error to slide a delicate finish past Casazza.

Substitute Matias Lequi nearly got ten-man Lazio back into it when his effort was blocked by a goalline clearance.

But Iaquinta made it 3-0 before the break by toe-poking in from six yards after getting in front of Matias Lequi on Di Michele's intelligent through ball.

Massimo Oddo nodded Paolo Di Canio's corner kick wide, but it was effectively one-way traffic with saves on Di Michele and Antonio Di Natale before Iaquinta shaved the woodwork.

Lazio finally reacted in the second half with two brilliant De Sanctis saves on Rocchi's turn and volley and a Lequi header. Di Michele fired Udinese's potential fourth over the bar, then Iaquinta won a tackle and brought a good save out of Casazza at the near post.
