Young England Earn Last-Gasp draw
Latest News | News Archive

03/30/2004. Substitute Michael Chopra scored a last-minute equaliser to earn England Under-21s a 2-2 draw against Swedish on Tuesday night.

Dean Ashton hade earlier scored from David Bentley's 14th-minute corner to give England a 1-0 lead against the run of play after Sweden had dominated the early stages.

Second-half goals from Per Nilsson and Johan Andersson - capitalising on errors in the England defence - put the young Swedes in the driving seat before Chopra's late strike. It was the reward for a spirited England fight-back.

After early Sweden pressure Bentley's deep corner was sent back across goal by Steven Taylor for Ashton to nip in front of keeper John Alvbage and head the ball into the roof of the net.

Dawson and Ashton came close to increasing England's lead before more Swedish pressure produced an equaliser in the 58th-minute.

England's defence was guilt of slack marking as Per Nilsson ran onto Tobias Hysen's free-kick to glance the ball past Carson with his head.

England manager David Platt sent on substitutes Matthew Kilgallon, Darren Ambrose, Lee Grant and Jonathan Stead, but lack of communication between keeper Grant and Kilgallon gifted Sweden a second goal as Johan Andersson nipped in between them to knock the ball into an empty net from a harmless-looking through-ball.

Chopra saved the day with a last-gasp equaliser from close range.

Sweden U-21: Alvbage, Antonsson, Adam Johansson, Ucar, Per Nilsson, Hysen, Holmen, Lars Nilsson, Pinones-Arce, Jon Jonsson, Stefanidis.
Subs: Wiland, Martin Andersson, Andreas Johansson, Johan Andersson, Jardler, Djuric, Rosenberg.

England U-21: Carson, Hoyte, Taylor, Dawson, Ridgewell, Tonge, Bentley, Reo-Coker, Downing, Cole, Ashton.

I don't think I've heard about any of those English players.
so you don't follow premier league? Several players that has tasted EPL and some quite talked about. The Arsenal fans keep talking about Bentley. Milner play first team in Leeds. Is the Cole, Carlton Cole? If so he has played first team in EPL for some time now.
