Trapattoni tries missionary position

Giovanni Trapattoni has turned to God in an attempt to guide his distinctly ordinary Italy side to World Cup glory.

The most successful manager in Serie A history proclaimed last week that Alessandro del Piero's late equaliser against Mexico "proved there is a God" and later admitted he is carrying a bottle of holy water throughout the tournament.

"I brought a pint," said Trapattoni, whose sister is a nun.

"There's no problem in showing that I believe in God. I hope to convince other people to believe as well. I would be happy if they did."

Trap has his work cut out as a missionary in South Korea, though, where a large proportion of people follow Chondogyo, the mystical movement formed by Cho Cheu, who was deemed a heretic and executed in 1863.

More worryingly for the Italy coach, more than two-fifths of the 50 million population are Buddhists, who won't have looked kindly on his treatment of one of their most famous followers - the overlooked Roberto Baggio
