Trapattoni has yesterday expressed his concern about having play-offs to determine the scudetto winners and Champions League spots.

With the World Cup around the corner he is worried about the prospect of a two-legged play-off should two teams finish level on points and suggested that instead a one-off match should be played on neutral territory.

He said: "If there has to be a play-off it is better to do it on a single day"

Trap added: "I hope there is no play-off," at a meeting of Italy's football coaches.

"Even if the probability of it happening is very high but at the moment let's not put the cart before the horse."

Trap plans to name his party of 23 players for the World Cup on May 6, the day after the last round of scheduled matches but, as well as increasing the possibility of injuries, he may have to hold fire if a play-off proves necessary.

In Italy if two teams finish level on points rules demand a two-legged decider on a home and away basis. If all three teams were to finish level the weakest team would be eliminated by a mathematical formula called the 'media inglese' and the surviving two would play off.

It is a bit of a concern for the players isn't it? It may take a bit more out of them before flying to the far east.
