Rangers were poised to part
company with their captain Lorenzo Amoruso as they put the
finishing touches to bringing Dutch international Bert Konterman
and Scotland defender Paul Ritchie to Ibrox.
The Scottish champions confirmed on Thursday they had
agreed a fee of 4 million pounds ($5.98 million) for Amoruso
with English premier league side Sunderland -- the same amount
they will will pay Feyenoord for Konterman who has been named in
the Netherlands' squad for the European championship finals.
BBC Radio Scotland said Rangers chairman David Murray had
confirmed "a broad agreement" with Sunderland for the transfer
of Italian Amoruso if he could reach a settlement on personal
terms.
Amoruso joined Rangers in 1997 from Fiorentina for 4 million
pounds and led the team to two successive titles. He angered
Murray and coach **** Advocaat recently by claiming Rangers
refused to speak to him about a new contract.
If Amoruso goes his place will almost certainly be taken by
Konterman. Rangers have concluded negotiations with Feyenoord
for the centre back who is expected to sign a three-year
contract once Euro 2000 is over.
The Scottish champions also confirmed that Ritchie would
arrive on July 1 as a free agent after agreeing personal terms.
Ritchie spent most of last season on loan at first division
Bolton Wanderers after his Scottish club Hearts became
frustrated by his desire to become a free agent.
