Barcelona is at the center of speculation concerning its star player Rivaldo. The Brazilian playmaker, winner of FIFA's
1999 World Player of the Year award, was linked with a move to Lazio after falling out with Barcelona's coach Louis van Gaal.
Both clubs denied last week's Italian press reports of the impending transfer, which valued Rivaldo at $53 million.

That would be a record, but there are plenty of other players likely to be on the move in the next four months that
could also make a sizeable contribution to the total transfer market value, estimated in a France Football magazine report at
$28 billion for the past three years.

Gabriel Batistuta, Filippo Inzaghi, Marcelo Salas and Francesco Toldo could all switch clubs, according to Italian press reports. Barcelona and Real Madrid, Spain's top two clubs, are habitual big spenders, and Atletico Madrid may be forced to
sell top scorer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink if the team is relegated.

Transfer Frenzy

Sol Campbell, Marc Overmars, Emmanuel Petit and Andy Cole have been linked with moves away from their English clubs, and
David Trezeguet and Sylvain Wiltord, stars in France, are also reportedly looking for transfers. FC Porto's Brazilian striker
Mario Jardel, who averages more than one goal per game in the Portuguese championship, could also move to a more lucrative contract.

Add to those possibilities the unexpected stars of Euro 2000 and it could be a record year for transfers, particularly with
many clubs thinking they can't afford not to buy.
