Ok, ive seen lots of threads like is negative football taking over and also people seem to be getting bored of 'so an so' vs. 'so an so'. So how about this one. Can anyone name a select 11 (or even a squad) of curent footballers who would fit in with a total football style of play. For those who arent familiar with total football think '74 Holland. Basically players who are comfortable in a range of positions, (if you follow Cruyff's philosophy also excelent technique and two footedness is important). Thank you

PS im still considering this one

Di Stefano, Pele, Cruyff, even Maradona at times....

RONALDO is also a total footballer!

he scores like a mad man...and plays better defense than R. Bravo and Pavon :D...

Glad you like most of my line up he! he!.

I chose Stam because he is one of the best centre backs in the world but can play very well out in the flank. To play out in the flank you need to be able to be good offensively. Which is rarely the case when it comes to central defenders. Usually players like Jamie Carragher, Silvestre or Maldini who are usually played in the flanks are rarely if ever as outstanding in the centre as a player who is naturally played there. Maldini being the exception of course. That's why I chose him.

Julio Baptista I chose because he used to be a defensive player and was converted into a striker which has panned out for his club. He has been great for Sevilla this season and he will be part of the Brasilian set up in the next world cup. That's saying alot considering he will be competing against players like Ronaldo for a starting position.

isnt it more of a mentality....i mean Cruyff sure wasnt the greatest tackler but if your committed to doing it then its all the same right.

AS Roma, this is true but Cruyff could play any attacking position, as could several of the dutch '74 team, who would had no fixed position they would just fit in and find space wherever it was, this made them very hard to pick up and made for some entertaining football as well

Actually, what is 'Total Football'? I've never seen Rinus Michel's side play a game all my life. Everytime I asked any football fans (In real life), all they gave me was "Very good style of football with lots of pressing, attacking and one-touch passes". I believe you guys can be more detail than that. ;)

Also, if 'Total Football' is indeed that good, why haven't we heard of a team that imitates it?

See my first post for a basic description of total football, it basically means no fixed positions, players would be compentent in all the qualities you look for in a player and therefore comfortable in any position

or alternatively have a look for yourself (its free)Go to

http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/p/cg/ned_bra_1974.html#

and click on watch video clips

I dont think you see it nowadays as footballers are trained to specialise in specific positions and focus all there efforts on improving the attributes necessary to suceed in that position, therefore other aspects of play are somewhat neglected. Oh course you get the exceptions but they are rarer now, that is why i started this thread.

Ajax are the immediate one that comes to mind who still train players to be compentent across the field
