Mexican Torneo Clausura 2004 - Match Week 3 Wrap

02/02/2004.
Monterrey 3-0 Tecos UAG

The Rayados of Monterrey had no problems disposing of an uninspired Tecos to secure their first victory of the season. The match played at Estadio Tecnologico was also the first win for Monterrey under head coach Hugo de Leon. Alex Fernandes provided the Rayados with the finishing touch the team had been lacking in previous games. The Brazilian striker opened the scoring in the 28th minute after a back heal pass from Guillermo Franco left him one on one against the goal keeper. Alex doubled the lead five minutes later off a header and sealed his hat trick in the 85th minute with another header.

Chiapas 2-1 Guadalajara

Two costly mistakes ended Chivas of Guadalajara perfect start of the season. Chivas which had two wins with no goals conceded coming into the match were overtaken by a defiant Chiapas squad. The Jaguars as Chiapas is known didn't lose its morale despite allowing a goal in the 28th minute. Adolfo Bautista culminated a quick counter to put Chivas on top. Chiapas however redoubled their efforts and took control of the match. It wasn't until the second half that their persistence paid off. First a late challenge from Oswaldo Sanchez over Sebastian "Didi" Pareyra awarded Jaguares with a penalty kick that Paraguayan Salvador Cabanas converted to tie the match. Then in the final minutes of the match Felipe Ayala with a potent free kick hands Chiapas the win.

Atlas 0-2 Cruz Azul

An inspired Marcelo "Chelo" Delgado led the Cement Mixers of Cruz Azul to an important away victory over Atlas at Estadio Jalisco. Cruz Azul proved to be a more solid squad with the incorporation of Cesar "Chelito" Delgado and Luciano Figueroa. Chelo opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a brilliant individual play inside the box leaving a host of Atlas defender in his wake. Delgado would bag his brace in the 85th minute and secure the win for Cruz Azul. The Rojinegros of Atlas have only managed to accumulate one point while Cruz Azul has climbed to second place of Group three.

America 3-2 Veracruz

Cuauhtemoc Blanco made a mockery of Veracruz as America routed the Red Sharks at Estadio Azteca. America took the early lead three minutes into the match as Reynaldo Navia scored his first goal of the season. Veracruz would tie the match in the 33rd minute with a goal from Gustavo Biscayzacu and seven minutes later Navia would get red carded. It seemed as if the situation was now in favor of Veracruz but Blanco would emerge and steal the show. The volatile striker put America back in the lead in 55th minute with an impressive free kick. After the goal he would get into a grudge match with opposing keeper Damian Grosso who imitated one of Blanco's goal celebrations after stealing the ball from him. Blanco however responded with another goal and proceeded to mock the keeper with a new celebration. This time Blanco pretended to be a human ball and launched his body twice into the net signaling the two goals he had just put past Grosso. Veracruz would respond with a goal in the final minutes of the match.
