...play in Turky's second division, they are called Vanspor and are a little ahead of Tirol in the line of happenings.

Problems began when the club ran out of cash early in the season and could no longer fulfil their contractual obligations.

The manager left town. The senior players left town. Even the chairman left town and, for a while, only the physio remained to coach a squad of juniors and anybody else who turned up and fancied a game.

Vanspor promptly defaulted on a fixture because they couldn't afford the bus fare. Then a board member admitted he was touring shops in Van begging for bread, jam and olives to feed the players.

Help seemed to be at hand when the provincial governor stepped in to persuade local businesses to provide enough cash for Vanspor to struggle through the season.

Vanspor did not appear for their next match and now await a decision from the Turkish football federation on what is to be done. The smart money is on automatic relegation.
