FIFA's qualifying page

We have a separate thread with general information about WC 2011 in Germany. This thread is for qualifying match info and comments.

The UΕFA Qualifying Groups are as follows (4.5 teams to qualify, besides Germany, who qualify as Host):

Group play continues until 25 August 2010.

The eight Group winners go into a round of home and away play-offs on 11/12 and 15/16 September 2010, with the four winners booking places at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011. The four losers go into a further series of play-offs to determine which nation faces a representative from CONCACAF (Nov. 20 & 27) for one further place at the finals.

=================UPDATE===============

Qualifying nations are: Germany (as hosts), England, France, Sweden, and Norway.

Switzerland and Italy will play a two-leg series October 23 and 27 to decide which of them will go up against the third-place team from CONCACAF in November.

UPDATE: Italy prevailed 5-2 in aggregate over Switzerland, and moves on to face USA in a two-leg series Nov. 20 (in Padova, Italy) and 27 (in Bridgeview, Illinois) for the final WWC qualifying spot.

Update Nov. 27: Italy put up a good fight, but failed to qualify, losing the two-leg series against the USA on an aggregate of 2-0.

The AFC Women's Asian Cup 2010 competition will serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2011 WWC as well.

There are 3 World Cup spots up for grabs.

The finalists for the 2010 Asian Cup are: Myanmar, North Korea, China, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The tournament is underway in Chengdu, China: follow the results at the official website.

Update: Australia won the Cup, and qualifies for the WWC, along with runners-up North Korea and third-place Japan.

The CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifying Tournament will take place in Mexico from October 28 to November 8, 2010. This tournament was fomerly known as the Women's Gold Cup, and served as the confederation's championship tournament. No word yet on whether CONCACAF has simply abandoned the idea of holding a confederation championship.

There are 2.5 World Cup spots up for grabs. The Third Place team will play off against Italy Nov. 20 (in Italy) and 27 (at home).

Update: Oct. 31: USA, Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica have two wins each in two matches. They have all clinched advancement to the November 5 semifinals, regardless of the outcomes of the third and final matches of the group round.

Update Nov. 5: Big upset in the semifinals as Mexico beat USA 2-1! Canada and Mexico have qualified for the World Cup.
USA finished third in the tournament and must now face Italy in a 2-leg series Nov. 20 (in Padova, Italy) and Nov. 27 (in Bridgeview, Illinois) to battle for the final qualifying spot.

Update Nov. 21: Italy is not the pushover the USA was hoping for, but the Americans managed to get a precious away goal in the 94th minute yesterday in Padova, and take a 1-0 score into the second leg next Saturday.

Update Nov. 27: USA became the final country to qualify for the World Cup, with a 1-0 win over Italy in the second leg.

The CAF African Women Championship 2010 competition will serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2011 WWC as well.

There are 2 World Cup spots up for grabs.

Tournament finals are scheduled for October 31 to November 14, 2010 in South Africa.

The final is on November 14, but the two finalists will advance to the World Cup, win or lose. Their identities will be known after the Semifinals on November 11.

The teams still in the running are:

South Africa
Tanzania
Nigeria
Mali
Equatorial Guinea
Cameroon
Algeria
Ghana

Nov. 8 update: The semifinals on Thursday will be:

Nigeria v. Cameroon
Equatorial Guinea v. South Africa

Nov. 14 update:
Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have qualified for the WWC 2011.

The OFC's representative will be the winner of the Women's Nation Cup, scheduled for October 7-17, 2010 in Auckland, New Zealand.

UPDATE: those dates were later changed. The final was held on October 8 and New Zealand beat Papua New Guinea 11-0.

New Zealand qualifies for the 2011 WWC.

The CONMEBOL qualifiers are now slated for November 4-21 in Ecuador.

Update Nov. 15: It's now down to four teams: Chile, Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil. All four will represent South America at the Pan-American Games next year.

They will play a round-robin series on November 17, 19, and 21. The top two teams will represent CONMEBOL at Germany 2011, and also at the London Olympics in 2012.

Update Nov. 18: Defending champions Argentina lost to Brazil 4-0 in the first round-robin match on Wednesday. They must beat Chile on Friday to have a hope of finishing in the top 2.

Update Nov. 21: Brazil and Colombia have qualified. Defending champions Argentina failed to score a goal in three matches.

With the 16th and final qualifying spot now decided (USA having eliminated Italy 2-0 on aggregate), qualifying has ended and this thread is now closed.

Further discussion of the WWC 2011 will take place in the main thread.
