The Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions, chaired by Aleksander Čeferin, met at the Home of FIFA in Zurich today, 14 September 2017. During the meeting, the committee discussed the key lessons learnt from the successful FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and was updated about the state of preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup™.

The committee approved the procedures for the Final Draw of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in Moscow on 1 December 2017, as follows:

Allocation: All teams will be allocated to pots 1 to 4 based on sporting principles with each pot containing eight teams. This means that the October 2017 edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be used to allocate all qualified teams to the four pots according to their ranking in descending order, with the best seven teams along with hosts Russia in pot 1. The principle of drawing the teams into the groups will remain unchanged. Hence, no teams from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA, which could have up to two teams in the same group, will be drawn into the same group.

Group formation: Eight groups of four teams will be labelled A to H: the four pots will be emptied completely by allocating one of their eight teams to each of the eight groups.

I simulated a draw using a number randomizer (shifting down teams which could not be in their original group due to the federation restriction rule), and it looks quite fun. Although, I cannot say I am fully satisfied, and surely the WWE community shares my wet dream of having Serbs and Croats in the same group :D

Group A
Russia
Japan
Denmark / R. of Ireland
Peru

Group B
Poland
Australia/Honduras
Egypt
England

Group C
Brazil
Morocco
Iran
Switzerland

Group D
France
Panama
Iceland
Uruguay

Group E
Argentina
South Korea
Costa Rica
Spain

Group F
Belgium
Nigeria
Sweden
Mexico

Group G
Portugal
Saudi Arabia
Senegal
Croatia

Group H
Germany
Serbia
Tunisia
Colombia

I will be in Moscow for some 15 days in June. I will see Serbia - Brazil at Otkrytie Arena. Want to go see a couple of other group games, trying to buy tickets for Nijniy Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, may be Koenigsberg (Nigeria - Croatia are playing there :D )

I'll be in Samara, Kaliningrad (aka Koenigsberg) and Moscow for all three Serbia matches. I'll be at the Serbia-Brazil game as well. Also, I got tickets for the round of 16 match in St. Petersburg if by some miracle we finish 2nd in our group.

There is this 41yo Saudi LB who plays for a Bulgarian first division side, hoping he would get called in their WC team. Rumors say he is paying all the expenses of his club to be a regular.
