European football's governing body announced far-reaching changes to the UEFA Cup on Thursday, adding a group stage from the 2004-2005 season and cutting the number of clubs.
UEFA decided to split the competition into three rounds, starting with a knockout phase of home and away matches involving 80 clubs. Ninety-six clubs currently qualify for the UEFA Cup.
The 40 qualifiers from the first phase will then play in eight groups, with three qualifying from each group and then joining eight teams relegated from the Champions League for a final knockout phase.
Clubs in the group phase will only play a single match against each other, and there will not be home and away legs as in the Champions League groups. The UEFA Cup winners will play 15 matches.
UEFA spokesman Mike Lee said the changes meet the demands of major clubs and should give a boost to the competition, whose television audiences have been flagging because of rivalry from the Champions League.
It's 5 team group in the 2nd round. After the 1st knock-out round the remaining 40 teams will be divided into 8 groups of 5 in which everybody plays the others only once (so 4 matches: 2 teams you meet only at home and the other 2 only away). The best 3 of each group will go on to the 3rd round together with the 8 third placed teams from the CL-groups.
