SA Special: The Scudetto Scenarios

04/30/2002. Who will win the Scudetto?

SoccerAge has decided to clear up any remaining doubts you might have on the tightest Italian title race ever by guiding you through all the possible situations that can occurr in Sunday's last Serie A round.

Inter will crown themselves Serie A champs with a win over Lazio, but also with a draw, provided that Juventus and Roma don't win, and even with a defeat, provided that Juve lose in Udine and Roma collect no more than one point in Turin against the Granata.

INTER IF…(55,56%)

Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 69, Juve 68, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 69, Juve-Roma 68
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 70, Juve 68, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve X = INTER 70, Juve 69, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 70, Juve-Roma 68
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve X = INTER 70, Juve 69, Roma 68
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 72, Juve 68, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve X = INTER 72, Juve 69, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve 2 = INTER 72, Juve 71, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 72, Juve-Roma 68
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve X = INTER 72, Juve 69, Roma 68
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve 2 = INTER 72, Juve 71, Roma 68
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER 72, Roma 70. Juve 68
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve X = INTER 72, Roma 70. Juve 69
Lazio-Inter 2 - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve 2 = INTER 72, Juve 71, Roma 70

---------------------------

Juve have good chances as well. All the Bianconeri have to do is win in Udine (in this case, Roma wouldn't be a problem for Lippi's men) and hope that Inter don't defeat Lazio.

JUVE IF…(22,22%)
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve 2 = JUVE 71, Inter 69, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve 2 = JUVE 71, Inter 69, Roma 68
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve 2 = JUVE 71, Roma 70, Inter 69
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve 2 = JUVE 71, Inter 70, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma X- Udinese-Juve 2 = JUVE 71, Inter 70, Roma 68
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve 2 = JUVE 71, Roma-Inter 70

---------------------------

Things look much more difficult for Roma, who need Inter to lose in Rome and Juve not to win in Udine.

ROMA IF…(7,41%)
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve 1 = ROMA 70, Inter 69, Juve 68
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve X = ROMA 70, Juve-Inter 69

---------------------------

A 3-team tie is impossible, but there are some chances of a playoff for all of the three sides.

INTER-JUVE PLAYOFF IF…(7.41%)
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma 1 - Udinese-Juve X = INTER-JUVE 69, Roma 67
Lazio-Inter 1 - Torino-Roma X - Udinese-Juve X = INTER-JUVE 69, Roma 68

INTER-ROMA PLAYOFF IF…(7.41%)
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve 1 = INTER-ROMA 70, Juve 68
Lazio-Inter X - Torino-Roma 2 - Udinese-Juve X = INTER-ROMA 70, Juve 69

This is not the tightest Italian title race ever even if seems like that. There were 2 seasons where the scudetto race was even tighter than this season.

In 1971/1972 with one game still to be played, Juventus was first with 41 points while Milan and Torino were tied in second with 40 points. In the last week of the season all of the 3 teams fighting for the scudetto won their games and Juventus won the scudetto.

In 1972/1973 with one game still to be played, Milan was first with 44 points while Juventus and Lazio were tied in second with 43 points. In the last week of the season Juventus won their game but Milan and Lazio lost their games so Juventus won the scudetto with 45 points while Milan finished second with 44 points and Lazio finished third with 43 points.

For the 2001/2002 season to be considered as tight as those 2 I mentioned which are really the 2 tightest ever, Roma should have the same points as Juventus right now not 1 point less like it does.
