·Nigel Winterburn is no longer a Gunner, instead a Hammer
The defender, once part of the legendary Arsenal back four, lost his starting place to Brazilian Silvinho and was unhappy at the prospect of no regular first team action.
The experienced full-back will challenge Scott Minto and Stuart Pearce for the left-back slot, although former England defender Pearce, 38, is still on the road to recovery after breaking his leg.
Assistant manager Frank Lampard said: “Nigel is looking forward to it and we are looking forward to him, and with all the experience he has got he is going to put us in a better position.
“He is a very good passer of the ball and that is a very important part of our game, and we all know from the last week of watching Euro 2000 the importance of passing the ball.”
Lampard told West Ham’s official website that the Hammers were pleased to at last get their man.
“It has been a while getting it organised and it’s nice he has joined us eventually,” he said.
Winterburn is West Ham’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of French striker Frederic Kanoute, who had been on loan at Upton Park and has completed a £4million permanent move from Lyon.
