On Saturday night the lions will have just another of those easy games...:tongue:

Athletic arrives to Donosti with 36 points, Erreala has 30, so it´s a really important games for both clubs. Athletic to don´t let Barça get a distance in the table or even to get that 4th place, and for Erreala is one of the last chances to continue in the fight for Europe, not because the distance will be too big in case of loosing but because the CL starts again and we all know what happened in the beginning of the season.

Erreala has won 4 of the last 5 games, Athletic comes after a 3 wins run and being the best team of the second part of the season so far. A match between to teams on form.

If I´m not wrong Erreala will have all the players ready, Aranzabal will be back. Well, Lee has travelled to Korea to play with his NT but he wasn´t playing anyway... In Athletic Aranzubia returns after his sanction, Del Horno received his 5th yellow card so isn´t playing, Larrazabal will take his place:dazed: and Murillo got injured AGAIN! one month out (for 4th time this season??) he has only played 45 minutes so far.:depress:

The only doubt in Athletic´s line up is Orbaiz or Tiko in the midfield, Orbaiz is playing lately and doing well, but Tiko is an specialist in Erreala derbies and Westerveld´s personal nightmare.:scared: We´ll see if he plays, maybe not as a starter but he will have minutes to put Sander nervous.;) Etxebe is another specialist in these games, I expect a great performance by him.;)

With all of this the probable line ups are:

Real Sociedad: Westerveld, Rekarte, Schürrer, Kvarne, Aranzabal; Xabi Alonso, Alkiza, Karpin, Gabilondo; Nihat, Kovacevic.

Athletic: Aranzubia, Javi González, Luis Prieto, Karanka, Larrazabal; Gurpegi, Orbaiz, Etxeberria, Yeste, Ezquerro; Urzaiz.

Well it is going to be a cracker that's for sure!

Both teams are pretty much on form at the moment and they have had a good start to 2004. Erreala must win this game if they want to catch up with the Rednoses. I predict a victory for Erreala in a hard game.

These Derby Matches make wish I had a million Euro's to fly in to Donstia and watch the game.:depress:

Is there any way I could watch this online?

Erreala has been playing well, but Athletic are better.

Because I really never get to watch these matches:
1) which team has better defence?
2) better offence?
3) better coached?

Is this game on SKY? Unusual for them to show any game not involving Beckham's team. Still, good on them for showing it.

I've just discovered this site, so I'll probably bore everyone with questions, but I've been to watch Athletic many times and visit Euskadi about twice a year. My Euskera is basic but getting better, so forgive me if I need clarification sometimes.

Can anyone recommend any good sites dealing with Basque football?

Cheers mate. I'm already a subscriber to Athletic's website.

I'm glad the game is on Sky as I was at a bit of a loose-end football-wise this weekend, thanks to Fulham knocking us out of the FACup.

How come you follow Athletic then? For me its a complicated tale of Howard Kendall, politics, family and friends. The usual then.

One thing I would like to know though is how do you get those pictures under your name? I'd quite like a picture of The Dome (Howard Kendal to you - many - non-Evertonians) under mine.

That's not good news for Koreans...:(

I heard that Karpin will retire after this season. Is that true?(I can't believe Korea media-they exaggerate too much) If Karpin retires I really hope that Lee can play in Right Wing position.

Anyway, Basque Derby hass always been my favorite game. I saw this season's first derby through internet, but I'm not sure I can watch this time.

bilbao2brooklyn, I found internet address in satfootball.com that shows this game, but this link is always not working. Especially, turkish internet site shows lot of Erreala's game, but I can't find this time.:depress:

Welcome Fish.:)

You need 100 posts to be able to put an avatar, so we have to wait for 98 more to see yours.;)

I´m sure you know this but in Bilbao you can find a lot of Everton fans thanks to Howard Kendall, he sometimes comes to San Mamés too.

Seol I´ve also heard Karpin is retiring this season, and that could be an opportunity for Lee, although he is not even making the bench lately. A non EU player who costed 3 million € needs to do more to stay in the team, I wouldn´t be surprised if he is sold or loaned at the end of the season. They could sign someone for the right wing, try to keep Karpin or give an opportunity to Xabi Prieto. Still, we must have patience, it´s normal it takes time for him to adapt to the league, although months keep on passing...

For the bilbotarras all games are easy, aren´t they?;) There´s a fact, 10 years ago it was the 50th Erreala-Athletic in Donosti. Result? 5-0 . This is the 60th, so....:D My prediction? I´m gonna be more bilbaino than you..... 6-0:devil:

Easy questions, just one answer: Erreala:D Just joking. I think both teams are quite levelled in all aspects. In defence, IMO Athletic have the best central defender in Euskal Herria: Luis Prieto, but Karanka is a weak point. Anyway Gurpegi and Orbaiz are very strong in defence too. In Erreala Rekarte,Kvarme and Schurrer are making a good season but Aranzabal isn´t half the player he once was.
Offensively, both teams have weapons enough to make the opponent suffer ( Etxebe:yuck: ,Yeste, Ezquerro, Urzaiz for Athletic and Karpin, Gabilondo, Nihat, Kovacevic for Erreala ). Maybe, IMO AThletic players are more unpredictable and Erreala´s offensive play is more of a passing game and based on pace, more collective. I wouldn´t say one´s attack is better than the other.
About the coaching I respect very much both´s work. They´re both calm, serious coaches who like offensive play and hard work. Maybe Valverde´s lack of experience could count against him when things don´t go as well as they are going right now. Denoueix made a marvellous work last year, he made a (near) champion team but if I had to say one weakness ( I hate doing this ) it would be his lack of reaction during games.

Looks like an interesting game since it is a derby. Paper wise to since I can't think of more in-form lineups.

Question; Maybe BioJedi or Txupa can help me on this. Do the Ultras of Real Sociedad and Atheltic Bilbao get along? I know it is a derby, but when the NT of Pais Vasco plays they seem to support the team in the same terrace, so it's hard to see how they would be enemies. It's amazing how in Spain, no matter how much the ultra groups stress politics(commusist, facist, separatist ect), how they you can finally find 2 groups on the same ideology that don't like each other like with Ultras sur and Frente Atletico. Anyhow, I didn't want to sound ignorant and post something I didn't know about, so if you can help me I'd appreciate it:)

Euskal Hintxak, which is conposed by diferent Basque teams groups members Herri Norte, Indar Gorri, Peña Mujika... if I'm not wrong, use to organize parties before and after the matches when it is a derby

I agree, Athletic´s team is younger and more irregular. We have some players that can pass from MOM to worst player in one week: Javi Glez, Yeste, Del Horno, Ezquerro, Urzaiz... while Erreala is more regular (although their having an irregular season in the league) and probably more compensated. But in terms of level I think both teams are more or less similar, although as I said Athletic´s basic team is younger and that could favour us for the future.

Yes, Herri Norte and Peña Mujika which are the 2 main groups respectively are members of euskal hintxak as Bio said. They pass the morning together in the old part of the city (for example today they had a tribute to Aitor Zabaleta, Erreala fan killed by a frente atlético member next to Calderón) and then they make a kalejira, going together from there to the stadium. They seat together inside the stadium.
