Chelsea face stiff penalties over Arsenal's Cole probe
tribalfootball.com - February 7, 2005

Chelsea and Arsenal will have to appear before a Premier League commission to answer complaints that the Blues illegally 'tapped-up' Arsenal's star England full-back Ashley Cole.

The hearing, before a three-man panel made up of a QC and two other commissioners who have links with the game, will be convened within the month - and their powers are unlimited.

It could mean Chelsea losing points, banned from the transfer market or even see their manager Jose Mourinho and chief executive Peter Kenyon suspended from duty.

The club could even be suspended from the League.

The Sun says all the parties who are accused of being involved will say it did not take place. That is despite the fact Chelsea have failed to go on the record denying it.

Investigation could force Cole out of Arsenal
tribalfootball.com - February 7, 2005

Arsenal are playing with fire over their stand against Chelsea in an alleged tap row concerning left-back Ashley Cole.

The Gunners and the FA tribunal could push Cole to the point where he pulls out of negotiations over a new contract at Highbury.

Manager Arsene Wenger's position is that he does not want Cole to attend the hearing. His major concern is that Cole, 24, signs a new deal.

But he is in no position to get an agreement while the club is at war with the player and his agent Jonathan Barnett.

Negotiations on a new deal are now on hold indefinitely while the investigation continues.

But the breakdown in relations signals the exit door for the England ace this summer - providing Chelsea are not banned from signing him

Pires urges Cole not to leave

Robert Pires today urged Ashley Cole to reject any offer to move to Chelsea as the Premier League opened a formal inquiry into allegations that he was tapped up by the leaders.

If found guilty of an illegal approach, a breach of Premier League rule K3, Chelsea could be fined and docked points - a massive blow to their title ambitions.

Yesterday they were held to a 0-0 draw with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, ending their eight- match winning streak in the league. They are still nine points clear of Manchester United.

The Premier League probe follows new evidence in a Sunday newspaper that appears to confirm that Cole did meet Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, chief executive Peter Kenyon and the agent Pini Zahavi at the Royal Park hotel, near Lancaster Gate, 11 days ago. Although League chiefs were reluctant to act, Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood asked Premiership chairman Dave Richards to act following the new allegations.

Cole, who is in negotiations with Arsenal about a new contract to replace the £27,000-a-week deal which expires in 2007, has emerged as one of Chelsea's major targets.

But Pires, who was himself a target for Chelsea when Claudio Ranieri was manager, today told Cole that he should stay at Arsenal where he will be able to challenge for major honours for years to come.

Pires said: "Everybody here is sure that Arsenal will once again be competitive next season with the young players we have at the club - and Ashley is one of those players.

"He has been at Arsenal for ever. He is a very attacking left-back and I think he is enjoying his football because at Arsenal he plays in an offensive team. I am not sure he will get the same pleasure at Chelsea, even though they are doing so well at the moment.

"I have built a fantastic playing relationship with Ashley. We play together so well - we could do it with our eyes shut. But you have to respect the decision of the player. Everybody has that right."

Premier League lawyers are expected to contact Chelsea and Arsenal to ask for their observations today before they set up a commission to investigate. Kenyon and Arsenal vice chairman David Dein are likely to discuss the controversy at a meeting of Europe's top clubs at UEFA's headquarters in Geneva today.

Chelsea issued a statement saying they would co-operate fully with the investigation, but Mourinho said. "I don't care about it. I'm a football manager, not a lawyer."

My gut feeling is that Ashley Cole leaves Arsenal in the summer for Chelsea.

Chelsea better be prepared to give us a bigger fee than what Real Madrid paid for Zidane. We could ask for 100m if we wanted to. :dielaugh:

Cole can dictate the outcome also. If he wants to leave, he simply stop contract talks with Arsenal. Arsenal are then forced to either sell Cole to a club he wants to go to, or to let his contract expire and get nothing in return for him.

Honestly, I don't believe with rumours linking Chelsea and Ashley Cole. Mourinho said that he wants to buy a left-back, yes. But he doesn't strike me as a manager who would have 2 world class players a position. Chelsea already has Wayne Bridge, who I think is a very good left-back, and I doubt, despite their financial condition, they'd want Ashley Cole. While it is true that Chelsea can afford Ashley easily, I doubt that it'll be good for the team's morale because everyone would feel threatened. Of course competition is good but it shouldn't be between 2 very good players for the same spot.

Which is why I'd be inclined to think there is still something to the rumours that Chelsea were after Maxwell at Ajax in early January.

And that's in the middle of 2007. There'd be no loser out of this. We either get an astronomical fee and already have a ready made replacement in Clichy or keep the player who would probably end up being our next captain.

I still think we should demand Cech plus money before any contract talks with Cole can begin :shades:

Real Madrid aim to beat Chelsea for Arsenal's Cole
tribalfootball.com - February 8, 2005

Real Madrid could trump Chelsea for Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole.

The Spanish giants see Cole as an ideal replacement for the ageing Roberto Carlos and believe they can land him for £20million this summer.

Real hope to take advantage of the tap-up controversy by stealing in and nicking Cole from under the noses of Chelsea.

A Real insider told The Sun: "Real Madrid have followed Cole's progress for some time - before even his outstanding performances at Euro 2004.

"He is exactly what the club is looking for to step into Roberto Carlos' boots."

Real feared the racist abuse aimed at Cole during England's friendly against Spain in Madrid last November would see him rule out a move to the Bernabeu.

But the player - who has suspended contract talks with Arsenal while the Chelsea probe takes place - could at some stage feel that staying at Highbury is not an option.

It could work like that, but in many cases it also results in a club not getting what they would expect if the player only wants to go to a certain club.

Cech? please. Cech is probably worth about the same as Cole. Reliable goalies like him are few and far between, as you know very well. I'd rather take my chances on a left back coming from elsewhere than hoping another goalies as good as Cech comes along. Cudicini is not going to be able to play like he did 2 years ago anymore as he has gotten older now.
