ROMAN MAKES £12m BID FOR 'NEW MARADONA'
By Alan Nixon And John Cross
CHELSEA owner Roman Abramovich has set up a controversial £12million transfer swoop for Argentinian striking sensation Carlos Tevez.
The Stamford Bridge supremo hopes to bring over Tevez in the summer from Brazilian club Corinthians - who bought him only months ago for £8m from Boca Juniors.
Abramovich is said to have an interest in Corinthians, who were bought by Iranian Kia Joorbachian and his Media Sports Investments company.
Despite denials by the Russian's camp there are strong connections between the pair and insiders claim Corinthians have only bought Tevez to prepare him for Chelsea.
Tevez was the star of the 2004 Olympics win by the Argentinians but he does not have enough full caps yet to qualify for a work permit.
Just 21, Tevez has broken into the national side but should collect the caps in World Cup qualifiers to make him eligible for a move to Britain next season.
For all their success so far Chelsea have laboured up front where Mateja Kezman has flopped and both Adrian Mutu and Hernan Crespo have gone since Jose Mourinho arrived.
Chelsea have been looking at several strikers, including Inter Milan's Brazilian Adriano and could even sign two top-line forwards this summer. But Tevez is now high on that list if the work permit problems can be overcome in the next few months, with the transfer only emphasising Abramovich's worldwide network of contacts.
Tevez - predictably dubbed the new Diego Maradona because of his looks and size -o would be a sensation in the Premiership and Champions League.
Many leading clubs wanted him during his time at Boca but Corinthians, now backed by the mysterious Joorbachian and his millions, got their man.
A few months in the attack-minded but leisurely Brazilian league will be used to hone up the shooting skills of a player destined for Chelsea.
