Doctors amputate leg of former Brazil coach Tele Santana

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Former Brazil soccer coach Tele Santana, who has been battling diabetes for years, had part of his left leg amputated Monday.

Tele Santana, who coached Brazil at the 1982 and '86 World Cups, was hospitalized five days ago with blood circulation problems caused by arteriosclerosis, said Natalia Rezende, a spokeswoman of the Felicio Roxo Hospital in Belo Horizonte.

Rezende said Tele Santana was in stable condition and would probably be transferred from the intensive care unit to a private room on Tuesday.

Tele Santana, 72, also won two World Club Championships with Sao Paulo in 1992 and '93 and led his team to the Copa Libertadores title those same two years.
