Mario Jardel's move from Porto to Galatasaray would not have been possible without the help of compatriot and Brazil international goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel.

Board member Mehmet Cansun stated that the deal, which is due to be formally announced on Monday at a press conference after the prolific striker has completed a medical, would have been a struggle had it not been for the help of Taffarel.

"We won’t forget the help of our keeper Taffarel in the deal - he played a key role," said Cansun, who has travelled to both Barcelona and Brussels in the last week to hammer out the details of the transfers of Jardel and Alen Boksic, who will also be joining the Turkish giants.

Taffarel has built a solid friendship with Jardel when they have met up over the years for international matches and he convinced the striker that his future was with Galatasaray, in spite of the fact that he had received offers from a host of other top European clubs.

"Liverpool, Palmeiras and Inter were all interested in signing Jardel but he chose us and we are extremely happy with that," said Cansun at a press conference.

Jardel, who scored 52 goals in all competitions last season, will sign a four-year contract in a deal worth £18.8 million, whereas Boksic is said to have signed a three-year, £11 million contract.

Manager Mircea Lucescu fought off competition from Marseille and Monaco to clinch the Boksic signing.

Gala, a club in financial crisis, have only been able to fund the moves through a £24 million sponsorship agreement with mobile phone company Telsim.
