Most games in the second round of the Cup was played yesterday. The results are available at this page.

There's been a couple of surprises so far. Trelleborg were eliminated by division 2 side Sandviken, Häcken were beaten by Skiljebo SK and Landskrona lost to Tidaholm.

Other things to note were that Malmö FF had major problems beating division 2 side Friska Viljor (you gotta love that name). They went through after a penalty shoot-out. Helsingborg also struggled against Brommapojkarna, winning 1-0 after a tight game.

Patrik Elmander scored four goals for Örgryte when they beat Oskarström 6-0 and Andreas Hermansson scored all Hammarby's four goals when they beat Snöstorp Nyhem 4-1.

There is still one game to be played in this round, and that's Carlstad United against IFK Göteborg which will be played on May 4. The draw for the third round is at 13.00 today (friday).

Three more games in the third round were played last night. These were the results:

Helsingborgs IF - Malmö FF 0-3
IFK Norrköping - Västerås SK FK 0-5
Örgryte IS - FC Café Opera 4-0

Niklas Skoog scored a hattrick for MFF when they beat HIF in front of 3634 people. When the same two teams played in Allsvenskan a week ago 15107 people were watching... Norrköping embarrassed themselves when they lost 0-5 at home to division 1 team Västerås.

The remaining game IFK Göteborg - Syrianska will be played tonight.

The fourth round was drawn this morning:

Degerfors IF (2)–AIK (A)
Myresjö IF (2)-Malmö FF (A)
IF Elfsborg (A)-Västerås SK FK (S1)
Ängelholms FF (S1)-Väsby IK FK (2)
IFK Malmö FK (S1)-Djurgårdens IF FF (A)
Örgryte IS (A)-Hammarby IF FF (A)
Örebro SK FK (A)-GIF Sundsvall (A)
The winner of IFK Göteborg (A)/Syrianska Föreningen (2) -Bunkeflo IF (3)

AIK got Degerfors and Djurgården got IFK Malmö. Hammarby got ÖIS away. I smell conspiracy! ;) The games will be played on June 27.

The quarter finals will be played tonight. Most interest will be directed at the Stockholm derby at Råsunda. As always, AIK are the favourites. Hammarby still hasn't won at Råsunda since the autumn of 1999. They haven't beaten AIK since the spring of 1998. They haven't beaten AIK in the cup since the early 70s...

The projected attendance figure is currently 15000, which would be the highest attendance at a Swedish cup game since 1976...

I was wrong on serveral things here. First of all, only two quarter finals were played yesterday, AIK-Hammarby and Malmö-Örebro. Djurgården-Väsby will be played tonight and Elfsborg-Göteborg will be played on July 26. Second, Hammarby has never beaten AIK in the cup...

The actual figure was 12155, a bit lower than expected, but still the highest figure apart from finals since 1976.

Malmö took a 3-0 lead in the first half against Örebro, all three goals by Peter Ijeh. Örebro got back to 3-2, but Malmö finished it off by making it 4-2. Three players were sent off. Malmö defender Majstorovic and Örebro striker Boniek had a private quarrel and both were sent off. Örebro's other striker Oyuga was sent off for elbowing Malmö's other central defender Mete. It seems to have been an interesting game... :D

AIK beat Hammarby 2-0. For Hammarby, this was at least a step in the right direction, despite the loss. They played pretty well and created a few good chances. The deciding factor was that AIK scored and Hammarby didn't.

Bajen really should have been in the lead after the first half. They created several good scoring chances but managed to waste them all. AIK created one great opportunity and used it.

In the second half, AIK controlled the game and created the best chances. Ishizaki was involved in everything AIK created. Hammarby still played pretty well but weren't able to break down AIK's defense.

Hammarby's new midfield set-up with Kennedy and Jonas Andersson central and Bergman and Winsnes on the wings worked quite well. I was impressed by how they stood up against AIK's much bigger and stronger players.
