Chris Sutton's move to Celtic has hit a new cash snag - over a row about what he is earning at Chelsea. The £6m (€2.5m) hit man seemed set for Parkhead after talks with Martin O'Neill and Middlesbrough boss Bryan Robson about his future.

O'Neill told Sutton that Celtic would match his wages at Chelsea - and the Parkhead club were led to believe that he is on £28,000 (€44 000) a week at Stamford Bridge

However Celtic double-checked this information with Chelsea and discovered that Sutton is 'only' on £23,000 (€36 500) a week.

That has gone down badly within Celtic where boss O'Neill was trying to play straight in the talks with the striker.

Celtic have not dropped their interest entirely but there is a stand-off and they could lose their target.

Now Sutton's future is totally unclear. He told Middlesbrough at the weekend that he was turning them down, but has now done a U-turn.

Sutton contacted Boro again to ask them to re-open negotiations, although that has yet to happen.

Middlesbrough were stunned when Sutton said no to their offer, which was around £30,000 (€47 000) a week, and are now wary of taking the next step and getting back to the table with the player and his agent
