Sunderland's summer signings are very much like London cabs and spiders in the bath. You get none for ages and then three come along all together.

Yesterday the Mackems clinched the £2.5m transfer of Don Hutchison from Everton and the slightly lesser known Belgian midfield man Tom Peeters from Mechelen for £250,000 as well as Jurgen Macho, an Austrian goalkeeper from FC Vienna.

Sunderland boss Peter Reid refused to name any more names but gave us a teaser by saying, "I would imagine there would be more signings."

Latest reports suggest that Reid has targetted two other top Premiership players at a combined cost of £10m and the pair in question are Arsenal`s Ray Parlour and Aston Villa's Ugo Ehiogu.

Parlour was linked to Sunderland here on Soccerage yesterday and it's thought that the two clubs had talks earlier in the week, although Arsene Wenger is reluctant to let his England international leave, despite the arrival of Lauren and Robert Pires.

Ehiogu in contrast, has previously expressed his desire to leave Villa Park and the only sticking point as far as that deal is concerned would be personal terms and whether Villa would agree with Sunderland`s £5m valuation.

Reid is happy with Sunderland's attacking forces, and so he should be with the league's leading scorer in Kevin Phillips up front, but their downfall last season, especially in the middle third of the campaign, was their startling ability to leak silly goals. He would hope that Ehiogu would help plug that gap and help the club improve on their finishing position of 7th last season.
