Peter Reid finally completed the signing of Argentinian Julio Arca yesterday.

The £3.5million move to Sunderland had been held up by red tape for the last week.

Arca, 19, is now expected to join the rest of the Sunderland squad who are in France.

The central defender caught Reid's eye when playing for his country's Under-21s last season.

The Sunderland boss said: "I spotted him playing against England and was impressed. I'm pleased to have him on board."

Reid is now hoping to secure Slovakian defender Stanislav Varga's signing.

The Slovan Bratislav player has returned to his club after a brief trial.

Arca, is a very promising defender. He is young, but he has all the makings of a great future defender. He can play very effectively as either a left back or center back. He has performed very well at club level in Argentina and for Argentina's youth teams. I believe that in the future he'll certainly break into the senior national team.
