Liverpool poised to sign Diego Cavalieri
Jul 9 2008

Liverpool were today expected to complete the £3million signing of Palmeiras goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri, their third major deal of the summer.

Sources in Brazil confirm the player completed his medical yesterday and a work permit has been acquired.

Cavalieri’s agent, Juninho Parmigiani, told Brazilian media: "We will conclude everything soon. He has already had the necessary medical examinations, talked with some of his new team-mates and has been impressed by what Rafael Benitez had to say to him."

Palmeiras’ sporting director, Toninho Cecilio added: "I have spoken and he has completed the examinations and is very happy. There are some clauses still being discussed but nothing that can block the deal."

Liverpool are expecting to recoup some of the fee by selling French keeper Charles Itandje to Galatasaray for £2million. They have already signed full-backs Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena.

The Brazilian will be the club’s number two keeper behind Jose Reina and his signing could signal the end of Scott Carson’s Liverpool career.

The England international spent last season on loan with Aston Villa, but Martin O’Neill has been unwilling to meet Liverpool’s asking price of around £10million.

Newly promoted Stoke have shown interest, but the fee would be a problem for the Potteries club with Liverpool boss Benitez now believed to be no longer interested in loaning out Carson again.

Benitez needs the money from a sale to help finance his other transfer activity.

The move of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth - for a fee of about £10million - should be confirmed in the next 24 hours.

Benitez’s main priority before the squad head to their Swiss training camp on Sunday, is to tie up the deal to bring Gareth Barry to Anfield.

Villa are believed to have said they will accept £17million plus Irish full-back Steve Finnan, who they value at £1million. They also want the fee paid in two instalments, half now and the rest in 12 months.

But the two sides now appear close enough for the saga to be concluded by the weekend.

Benitez, who last night spoke of his appreciation of Crouch’s contribution to the club ahead of the completion of his move to Fratton Park, believes the striker’s progress on Merseyside has vindicated his £7million purchase from Southampton three years ago.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I am proud of the progress he has made. When we brought him here people were talking about the deal, especially because he did not score for several games.

"But he showed his quality, showed he was a good player and a fantastic professional. We know we will miss him but you cannot stop a player who wants to play every week.

"He understands that with Torres here and Gerrard as a second striker, like he was at the end of last season, it will be difficult for him.

"Everything is friendly. I have talked to him and the agents. If he can agree with Portsmouth it will be perfect for everyone.

"People need to understand that we have supported Peter from the day he signed and we offered him a new contract before the summer.

"But I can understand that he wants to play every week, wants to start every game. As a manager you have to understand these situations."

Reinas been quality for years for Liverpool Itl be hard for Diego to get a game but then again You cant deny that Pepe has had some Howlers like the Everton Game and Chelsea and so forth Rafa Knows that thats why hes gettin rid of Itandje and getting Quality backup so it keeps the pressure on Reina to Perform.

I don't know what to make of this signing. I have the impression that he's too good for the bench, not good enough for our starting 11. Maybe he'll play in some games, make an impression and then be sold for a profit.

He's probably a more reliable backup than Itandje. I hope he can push Reina a bit, I think he has the ability considering he kept Marcos out at Palmeiras.

And for people who think Reina's not good enough, he's won the Golden Gloves for the past 3 seasons, which means he's better than Cech, van der Sar, Lehmann....

Looked very good in the Copa Lipertadores. Solid in all aspects of his goalkeeping and from what I saw the only weakness I saw in his game was that he was a tad slow off the line but still could really push Reina for a first team spot.

Top Signing

Reina is a better shot stopper and one of the quickest keepers off his line in the world but isn't as smart a keeper as Cavalieri

Yeah, he's not in Cech's class anymore. Last year he was the one with must-have couple of blunders, this year Cech took this honour from him, lol :>

agreecurrently Cech is no where near the level he use to be, IMO Reina was even or better then him last season.

I agree, Cech is over-rated. Ever since that head injury he's been prone to the odd mistake.

He's a top keeper, no doubt, but people make out he's in some elite group with Buffon and Casillas that is so much better then every other keeper in the world. I'll accept he's better then Reina but to say he's in a different class is bullshit imo. and over the last couple of seasons, if anything, it's the other way round.

Anyway regarding our new signing, I've seen him a few times but my opinion is mainly based on that of other peoples. He sounds like a top keeper, and imo it is good to have someone who is "to good to be on the bench," Reina now knows he can't afford to rest on his laurels and if he has a stinker like he did against the scum last year then Cavalieri can easilly come in and take his place. Hopefully they can push each other to a new level.

your joking right?
i think he's consistent, but he's just not quality enuff till he become a vital player for the team...i just seldom see he makes spectacular saves like Casillas or Buffon does...u know u seldom see he make saves that make you think he's really good...most of the time he just stand still...just my opinion...

Reina isn't as good as Casillas or Buffon, those two are in a level of their own. But he is as good as van der Sar, Cech (who was in the elite group 2 seasons ago), Frey, Julio Cesar.
