STRIKER LIGHT! £3.5M PER GOAL
Fergie's costly foursome outgunned by Johnson
David Anderson
THEY cost £70million to recruit but Manchester United's star-studded strike force has been put in the shade by Andy Johnson.

The Crystal Palace forward - who cost £750,000 - is in a team staring relegation in the face, yet his 19 league goals this season is the same number Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and Louis Saha have managed between them.

It is a statistic that highlights what has been United's biggest problem in the Premiership this campaign - scoring goals.

They have only 48 from 33 league games, and just 19 of them came from their much-vaunted strikers - a cost of £3.56m a goal. Arsenal have 73 goals and Chelsea 62.

United are on course for their lowest goals tally since the dark days of 1990 when Sir Alex Ferguson almost lost his job as manager.

The defeat at Everton on Wednesday was the 10th time they have failed to score in the league this season.

In contrast, their often-maligned defence has only been breached 20 times.

Cristiano Ronaldo's strike for United at Fulham over a month ago is their only league goal since February 26. The biggest disappointment for them has been van Nistelrooy.

The Holland frontman - whose season has been hit by injury - continued to find the target in the Champions League. But he has struggled in the Premiership, scoring only four goals, the last of them against West Brom in November. Smith has done better since arriving from Leeds, although the last of his five was in December.

Saha, a £12.8m buy from Fulham, has a single goal in 11 league outings.

Rooney has been the best of the bunch with nine Premiership goals, although there is still a question mark over whether he can form an effective partnership with van Nistelrooy.

But Ryan Giggs believes the midfield should shoulder some of the blame.

He said: "The lack of goals has been disappointing especially when you see the quality in the side and the football we've played at times.

"We've raised our game for the big games and have had no trouble scoring. The goals we scored against Newcastle in the cup semi-final are the kind we should have been scoring in other games.

"We've never relied on one player before and can't do that now. I know Ruud has an outstanding scoring record but we need to score more from midfield.

"We've always contributed goals from all parts of the team, and we haven't created enough chances."

it's Fergie's midfield that is the problem not the attack, also the injury to RvN.

Exactly. The big single difference is that Johnson has played virtually every game and has been given TWELVE penalties while I know that Man Utd have only had FOUR (van nistelrooy has scored three of his four prem goals from the spot)

Rooney was injured as was van diver, you also have to account for Johnson being the one goal shout for palace while Man Utd rotate and such

Yeah cause Cisse hasn't been out with a serious injury  He's played just 18 games this season compared with say Rooney with twice as many appearances. Cisse has also been brought on or taken off so many times as well, he's played 12 Premiership games and come on in 3 and been taken off in 4 ie he's completed just FIVE games start to finish
