Striker Dilemma

I think everybody would agree that the names for all positions except the striking position is pretty much certain, namely Cacerés as a CB, Hleb as a CM/winger and Alvés as a RB. For the striking position however we seem to have a bit of an issue on our hands.

Eto'o is leaving, that is certain and there is no point in denying it so we will need to sign a replacement of the highest level.

The names in the press seems to be the following:

- Adebayor

For some reason we are linked with this player who even the Arsenal fans themselves don't seem to rate despite his good season. We all know as well the record for Arsenal players leaving and personally I'm struggling to think of even one that was succesful.

He has recently stated that he will stay at Arsenal so that means he is unlikely to join.

- Berbatov

His price and the fact that the board seems to prefer other players makes him an unlikely acquisition.

- Ibrahimovic

One of the favourite of the boards but it's rumoured that he has been offered a Mega-contract consisting of €12million anually which is "outside the market" so to speak and this would make it difficult.

- Villa

He was rumoured a while back but it seems to have faded mostly because the board thinks he's better suited to a counter-attacking team rather than a dominating one. Make of that what you will. His relatively small size rules him out and it's not even discarded that he might stay at Valencia yet.

- Benzema

Last but not least.

The favourite of the fans and the board. Is young but has it all. Strength, technique, dribbling skill, shooting, finishing, off the ball movement and so on. You name it and he probably has it.

The main problem however is the players insistence on staying another season what with the new contract which makes him the best paid player in Ligue 1 and the fact that Lyon has no intention of selling unless a monster club-breaking offer comes in.

Personally, Benzema is my favourite but even I think it would be best for him to stay on another season if he is uncertain that could't handle the pressure of playing at a top club, let alone one which desperately needs to win now. It takes a lot more than just skill and even physique if you want to make it here. He will need sizable balls to to withstand the tremendous pressure of a club which will even boo it's own players if they are unhappy. You need to be absolutely sure and confident in your self IMO, there can be room for no doubts.

The reason this is a dilemma is because we WILL sign a new striker but know one seems to have a clue of who that might be yet.

I haven't included the likes of Guiza, Cruz, Crespo and so on because they would only be backup-up at best if they arrived and with Henry staying this option looks unlikely.

Another potential problem we have on our hands is if Ronaldo leaves Manchester. Not only would it seriously fortify Madrid but it would almost certainly mean United would skip past us and sign Benzema and Alvés in front of our noses. If this scenario came true it would be a nightmare and we would essentially be screwed. All we can do ATM is hoping this doesn't happen because it's a lose-lose situation.

So what do you think/should happen for the striking position?

And no Eto'o staying etc. Only come up with suggestions which are grounded in reality please.

Adebayor offers much more than "killerinstict"...And anyway, i find it a bit unfair to talk about a man who scored 30 goals last season as he is so bad...
If we want a clinical finisher we must go for Trezeguet - no one matches him in this aspect...

If we want a striker who offers more than goals, who creates spaces for the others, who fights until the end than adebayor is a good solution...
Sure he does that, but that's another question. Still, I don't believe in investing €30m for a player who's best characteristics i to create spaces for others. We once signed Larsson for free that did same. We should be able to find a cheaper option once again.
Pavlyuchenko would be a good cheap option.

He scored 30 goals too and he has so much space to improve...
I think Ade would be a good player for us...
Theres quite a few strikers better than Adebayor though. Eto´o, Ruud, Drogba, Villa, Fernando Torres, Maxi Lopez, Van Persie, Luca Toni, Aguero, Rooney, Ibrahimovic, Tevez.

Then theres those who are debatable like Mario Gomez, Klose, Benzema, Huntelaar, Diego Milito and Henry if he recovers form.

Anything around 30m is supremely overpaying. Only people fit to replace Eto´o are Drogba and Villa. With Deco and Ronaldinho gone I dont see how Eto´o will be problematic, those were the egos he clashed with. And its a change of management too.

With the Zara relegation for example Diego Milito would be about half the price of Adebayor or at most 20m. That would be much better business whilst keeping Eto´o.

i dont get it where Drogba, Van Persie, Luca Toni, Rooney, Tevez are better...Adebayor scored more goal then them (apart from toni), is physical better, he is everywhere better then tem...
This guy scored 24 goals in the league...its not so bad...

Why is everyone so impressed by Tevez? How many goals has he scored for manu...
The alternative to Adebayor seems to be Gomis, so we better sign Ade...

I'd prefer Gomis.

Half the price, half the ego.
I've no idea why Ade isn't rated as one of the best young strikers, because he clearly is.
I'd prefer Gomis.

I don't know, Gomis seemed very bad in the euros. But then again we can't judge a french player on that tournement seeing as how they all sucked ass. I haven't seen enough of him though.

Half the skill...

From what I've seen of him anyway. Anyway the club he plays for (?) would surely be begging us to take him away...
Adebayor is an underrated player. He's even underrated by Arsenal supporters. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's great. He just gets way too much flack. He's not the "big oaf" that I've been reading in this thread. He's definitely a good striker and I think he carried Arsenal for parts of last season when they were actually at the top of the table. My problem with him is that he hasn't proven himself at a top level for very long, he seems to have some issues and most importantly we'd be paying too much. Of course I think it's the market price, especially if you consider Wenger doesn't want to lose him. Still I think we could do better for that money (or with adding some more for somebody else).

I want el Kun more than anybody else. It'd be amazing if Rosell won an election (is an election a certainty?) and paid the buyout clause. However considering our current situation and me not loving all of our options, I'd look at Drogba. I don't know what his price is or if he'd leave with Scolari on board, but I think his price might be a bit of a knockdown fee. I also think that if Pep is going down the road he's going down, Drogba would be a great addition. He brings goals (even though he's not the best finisher), he's strong, he's good in the air, he brings assists, he's played in pretty much the same formation, he's got great European experience and is proven at that level as well and perhaps most importantly he's a monster defensively because he busts his ass out there. He's not Mr. Popularity, I know. Still I think he could be our van Nistelroy. Madrid made a steal when they signed him and I think Drogba could work out as a similar signing for us.

Kun Aguero would be amazing. 20 yrs old only & complete.

Do you think Drogba is a bit old?
We once signed Larsson for free that did same. We should be able to find a cheeper option once again.
Crespo?
I cant believe you arent going for Drogba

he is 30 but would have immediate impact and he is trice the player Adebayor is
Get Van persie instead of Adebayor, he is much better imo.
so is it a done deal?
Do you think Drogba is a bit old?
No, not if he's cheap enough. I certainly wouldn't consider him a long term solution, but I would think that so long as he maintains his fitness he's got two top level seasons in him and probably three.

Get Van persie instead of Adebayor, he is much better imo.
No thanks. Van Persie is injured waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too often. I would never consider him based solely on that.
Adebayor can be twice the player Drogba is...
