It's a tough job for a manager to choose some of the players on his team. Most are easy but there's always a few that a manager has to debate.

Does a manager go with the history of a player or current form? Does a player's form over the past season even matter considering that it was club football and a very different kind of team? What about their knack for scoring at international level (Klose, Crouch)?

Can you name some obvious examples from this WC or some recent ones that fit in these categories?

Though hindsight is 20/20. And managers have their reasons. I'm sure they put a lot of thought into these decisions so you have to put trust in them but at the same time managers will often "over think" things and make some errors. Sometimes they make a surprise pick and it pays off too.

Poor:

Brazil 2010 - Dunga leaves out Pato and Neymar. Especially Neymar. I felt like Neymar could have provided creativity to the attack. Age is just a number. Owen, Pele, etc. were not phased by the pressure of a WC. Julian Green this year scores a beauty on his first touch.

France 2010 - Domenech leaves out Benzema. He wasn't playing all that much at Real but many people said he is still a better option than what they were bringing. As we have seen this year, he has presence in the box and is very capable. I felt the same 4 years ago. Not a world class player but still pretty good.

Maybe:

Italy 2010 - Lippi leaves out Cassano and Balo. That was more about team chemistry and making a statement that Italy will not allow petulant players to wear their shirt. I don't blame Lippi though. I like what he was standing for. From a footballing perspective, was it a mistake?

Spain 2014 - Torres? Hard to say. He can still score but did Del Bosque have better options with Llorente or Negredo?

Argentina 2014 - Their attack has proven to be mediocre outside of Messi. Would Tevez improve them? There is disagreement between him and the current coach so who knows if this is good or bad.

France 2014 - Nasri? We will never know if he would have made them better. If he would have given them a better chance to beat Germany.

USA 2014 - This is a huge maybe when it comes to Donovan.

England 2006 - Sven brought 17 year old Theo. That one came out of nowhere since he wasn't even playing yet in league games. Considering England's other options outside of Owen and Rooney, maybe this did make sense.

Good:

England 2006 & 2010 - Taking Crouch. He scored in 2006 and he has scored 22 times for England in 42 games. He has unique height and still has pretty good feet for a big man.

USA 2014 - Julian Green showed that he belonged from the moment he stepped on the field. Probably should have been playing from game 1?

Germany 2010 - 20 year old Muller. Was a sensation at the WC.

2010: Clueless and scared Argie coach leaves out Zanetti and Cambiasso because they were both already better coaches than he was.

Poor:

Brazil 2010 - Neymar definitely could do something in 2010. But there are too many fixed claim in 2010 team. Robinho in LW and Kaka in AM, anybody?

France 2010 - Benzema is the best French player in recent years, but he wouldn't help with the 2010 situation, as Domenech already make a blunder by appointing Evra as captain and Anelka as their single CF instead of Henry.

Maybe:

Italy 2010 - Lippi is always a manager with no-compromise attitude, simply no place for whackjobs like Balo and Cassano in his team. Even he axed Baggio back in his Juve days.

Spain 2014 - Torres is the striker for big tournament as everyone else predicted.

Argentina 2014 - You can't benched Tevez for whatever reason.

France 2014 - There is only room for one midget, and that happens to be Valbuena.

USA 2014 - Klinsi prefers German speaking American, and he already decided that Dempsey is the titular leader of the team. There only room for one alpha dog in the team.

England 2006 - He did not even thrown Theo into the game, so pretty much another mental (nonsensical) decision by Sven.

Good:

England 2006 & 2010 - Reasonable, but taking Owen would be a more better decision, I say.

USA 2014 - No, if he flunked then he would never play again. See many possible legend, such as Nii Lamptey, Femi Opanbumi and many other African young starlet.

Germany 2010 - Lucky Germans, as always...thrown anybody at random and he become a star.

Leaving out Baggio for Japan Korea "just because he can" - easily the worst decision in Azzurri history.
Still had an allstar forward line though

Bringing no left back.this year was confused, even though there is.no name to mention... ive never seen this kind of blunder

Argentina: The Bad

2002: Riquelme and the young prodigy Saviola not selected. Aimar and Crespo marginalized for the over-the-hill Ortega and Batistuta.

2006: Exclusion of Zanetti. Marginalization of Aimar, Messi and Tevez in place of...Julio Cruz.

2010: Lots of things...No playmaker selected when both Aimar and Riquelme were good candidates (Banega not selected despite having a brilliant season, and Pastore marginalized). Zanetti not selected, Samuel laughably benched, Milito marginalized...
