After last season's circus to help Porto going through at Sporting expenses (and once again fail to win the competition) we kept the promise and will use this worthless tournament to give playing time to players from the B team and a few U-19.

Our first match is away at Vitória de Guimarães and this is our starting XI:

Marcelo Boeck
Ricardo Esgaio - Tobias Figueiredo - Naby Sarr - André Geraldes
Uri Rosell
Slavchev - Ryan Gauld
Heldon - Tanaka - Daniel Podence

We are winning 1-0 after a 5' goal by Heldon after a really nice pass by Podence to Esgaio.

The great Bruno de Carvalho is sitting on the bench next to Marco Silva. :shades:

Guimarães 0-1 SPORTING at HT

A nice first half by our kids letting Vitória have more of the ball and using the counter to score and to create danger a couple of times. Ryan Gauld and Slavchev had some really nice moments.

An intelligent game by Sporting letting Guimarães to take more of the ball and more of the shots and corners but practically no danger came out of it. Our defence was excellent with Tobias and Geraldes looking particularly good. Ryan Gauld in the first half and Heldon did well upfront. Overall these players just confirmed what Bruno de Carvalho recently told to the club's TV channell: our January reinforcements are in the B team, and they are pretty good.

Felipe what's actually the importance of this cup? Can clubs win a European spot by winning it?

Any why are there so many matches? And where's the final to be played, also in Oeiras?

This cup was created by LPFP (Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional), one of the two entities that manage Portuguese football. Initially it was created with the idea of giving more matches to clubs that were not involved in European competition and obviously to increase the revenue of LPFP.

The problem is that when LPFP decided to increase the size of the first and second tiers of our club football this cup lost it's already doubtful usefulness and it is now more a burden than anything else. Teams joining it rarely took it seriously almost never fielding their strongest line-up and several incredible referee decisions have marred it's reputation. It went to the point that this season this cup did not manage to attract one single sponsor and it was only when the tournament was already going on that they managed to find one, which is a company with close links to Porto and now Benfica.

Winning it does not give any European spot and the final is played in a random place.

We're back in the League Cup this time to play Boavista in Alvalade in Round 2 of Group C. Once again we will field a side filled with B team players and others usually called to the first squad but that are less used.

Here's the starting XI for the game that starts at 20:15 CET:

Marcelo Boeck
Miguel Lopes - Tobias Figueiredo - Naby Sarr - André Geraldes
Uri Rosell
Slavchev - Ryan Gauld
Ricardo Esgaio - Tanaka - Podence

Subs: Luís Ribeiro, Ramy Rabia, Wallyson Mallman, Francisco Geraldes, Hadi Sacko, Cristian Ponde and Ousmane Dramé.

Good first half by this young Sporting. Some moments of very good attacking football with Daniel Podence shining on that left flank but also a good showing by both wing backs (Miguel Lopes and André Geraldes) and also Slavchev, Esgaio and Tanaka, who had three goal chances.

At 60' Rosell is sent off with a second yellow. It's not even clear if it's a foul.
