We've started today our participation in the 2011/2012 edition of the League Cup with a 1-1 draw at Rio Ave.

It was a poor match where in spite of fielding the first team, with the exception of the keeper, Sporting clearly did not want to put the foot on the pedal too much, obviously not being able to forget that we have a decisive league match on Saturday against Porto.

The first half was poor with André Santos once again showing how little he brings to the team on that crucial DM position and Carrillo and Capel being the two players giving more signs of that "economy of efforts" the team showed tonight. We conceded a goal again from a dead ball situation with João Tomás being a bit lucky to be in the only place which was not being covered by our defence. Elias missed an incredible sitter and we still had quite a few more opportunities to score but we ended reaching half time one goal down.

In the second half Domingos made a few changes, both in personnel and in the tactical drawing, bringing on Matías Fernández and Izmailov, both coming back from long injuries (4 months in the case of Marat), for the places of André Santos and Diego Capel and later resting Elias replacing him with André Martins. Sporting clearly improved although the rhythm of our attacking game did not change that much.

Still we did enough not to lose this slightly meaningless match and Onyewu once again scored a decisive goal, his third in the season and second against Rio Ave, bringing a bit more justice to the score. The game did not end without Marcelo Boeck showing that he really is a quality sub for Rui Patrício, with three fantastic saves already on added time securing a point that may very well be decisive for our future in this little cup.

Porto was in full force spying us in Vila do Conde but I do hope and feel that Saturday will see a Sporting with a very different set of claws to face the bimbos.

Sporting's second game on this season's League Cup will kick off in approximately twenty minutes (21:15 CET) against Moreirense in Alvalade. After the draw in Vila do Conde in the opening group stage game, a win is a must in order to give us a good margin to face the last match against Gil Vicente.

This week was marked by Domingos pre-match press conference where he appeared in great style shooting some nice bullets against quite a few people, being most of them some of those eternal, and internal, "experts" which he appropriately called "doctors, fado singers and carpenters". :D

We are fielding a starting XI that shows a return to the usual midfield triangle, being Carriço the man chosen for the DM position. Let's see if either Elias or Schaars will be able to get rid of the marking chains that surely Moreirense will build around them and help out in the defense/attack flow of our game...or else we will see another frustrating night of long balls. Good to see Insúa back in his right place too. Finally let's hope that his insistence in playing João Pereira, in spite of his horrendous form, only means that we are doing our best to sell him to the first idiots that will pay anything for him.

Marcelo Boeck
João Pereira - Onyewu - Alberto Rodriguez - Insúa
Daniel Carriço
Elias - Schaars
Carrillo - Seba Ribas - Diego Capel

After Marcelo saved our asses with a great save in what was Moreirense's first attack in the game, a good counter led by Carrillo ended up seeing Capel winning a rebound and opening the score for us.

At 35' 1-1 for Moreirense by Ghilas with a superb finish after a good counter. João Pereira was however once again involved.

Moreirense now almost scored the 2nd in a counter but Rodríguez was fouled and the ref waved on.

1-1 at HT

Poor first half from Sporting incapable of playing with enough speed to break a defence that is not even parking the bus. We created two clear goal chances, one less than our opponents who had half of our ball possession. In spite of his goal, Capel was particularly uninspired, not taking advantage of the good support of Insúa. On the other side it was Carrillo who did better in spite of having João Pereira missing passes as usual. Our midfield was slow and Ribas was lost upfront, even if always showing a good attitude.

Jeffrén and Matías should come in to bring some speed and skills to this midfield.

Double sub at HT:

Matias and Bojinov IN for Carrico and Ribas. Well the first, very dubious the second.

Incredible stuff on added time. Jeffrén is fouled inside the box: penalty and red card. Bojinov picks the ball to put it on the spot. Matías tried to take the ball from him, as he is the official penalty taker and Bojinov pushes him away. The Bulgarian shoots...and fails. :palm:

Marcelo almost scored in the last move of the game but someone took the ball away from him...guess who? Yeah, the number 7. Jeffrén hit the post still but it's over.

1-1 - FT

A deserved score in a game that we never did enough to win. We started slightly better after the break with Matías bringing some needed quality to our midfield but we were virtually playing without a forward. The team is clearly affected by this last string of poor results and some players are not at the level showed before in this season. Moreirense is a decent side but perfectly beatable by a team like ours. Domingos says that he doesn't want to see any players leaving but I think some of these guys need some time off.

Good to see Jeffrén coming in. Decent game by Insúa.

Bojinov just signed his suicide note tonight.
