It goes something like this.

More advanced than a defensive midfielder, much heavier defensive responsibilities and aptitude than a central midfielder.

Breaks up and stops play in the middle whether against world class opponents or Richard Hughes, and then fits right back into the momentum of the team's attacking thrust.

Certainly not a water carrier having been United's most influential midfielder over the season, and most often imposes his dominance on the midfield despite lacking certain technical skills and strength that one would think are important to impose.

Some would say, the new Roy Keane. But there seems to be a slight tactical variation. In the defensive side of the pitch, Fletcher moves around much more to chase opponents. Like a "defensively roaming central midfielder"?! He would chase down play on the wing, pick up a man along the back line, and also mop up in behind the line. Which is unusual for a defensive midfielder like Keane or Makelele who prefer to stay in a certain zone and cut down on balls between the midfield and defence. Definitely you could say, he brings more "legs" to the defensive aspect of the game...

so yes, maybe a bit of genius from the old Manager once again. I just don't think professional football has seen a player like Fletcher. Or is it better just leaving it at "hybrid player"?

Important for United doubt he would be as important for most other top teams.

Hardly, to be honest. It is just a testament to the qualities of the player, but he has not invented a position for others to use.

In Chelsea he'd be in the "Bench Position"
Well, he very fits in the 'Thug' position !
What nonsense. Maybe if Chelsea had some of his class they would actually win something big. And let's face it neither Mikel or Essien are as good defensively as Fletcher.

At least he isn't quite cut out for the "Spitter" or "low-life pizza-thrower" position.

There's a legit case to be made because his defensive responsibilities are different from most midfielders. Like a Gallas type of defensive runner. But hardly have we seen such instructions transposed onto a midfielder.

Yes, he is definitely a genius in the vein of Pele, Garrincha, and Einstein.

A rare artifact from the poppy fields of Scotland.

The only players that will walk with ease into most teams out of this current United team are Rooney & Evra. Rio and Vidic not on current form but generally would get into quite a few teams as well. Fletcher is generally the only defensive midfielder United has got. He looks quite good defensively next to guys like Carrick, Scholes and Anderson because they **** up defensively once in a while. Meanwhile Fletcher usually plays safer passes and doesn't risk possession.

Pretty sure Gattuso invented such a position 10 years ago.
Not true, Gattuso is more accustomed to defending from the front and chasing high up the pitch, and doesn't chase back and cover as much as Fletcher does. Neither is he as good at carrying the ball so he is more of an "advanced aggressive defensive midfielder". Fletcher is more of a "free-roaming defensive central midfield runner". Perhaps very subtle differences, but definitely not the same at all.

Darren Fletcher is a central midfielder. There's no need to make a thread about how he is defining a new position because he isn't.

LOL But didn't you read the opening post/love letter?

He's shifting in between defense & attack, or something, and apparently that's like really new.
