Luciano explains Inter exit Tuesday 10 February, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciano insists that he had to rejoin Chievo because he wasn¡¯t enjoying life on the bench at Inter.

The Brazilian joined the San Siro outfit in the summer but he returned to Chievo last month after failing to feature for the Nerazzurri.

"I was happy with Inter," explains the former Bologna midfielder. "It was a good environment and I had some great teammates.

"The problem was that I was rarely getting a game. That is why I had to change clubs and I¡¯m sure I can return to my highest levels with Chievo."

The 28-year-old hit the headlines a few years ago after his exceptional form for Chievo when he was then playing under the name of Eriberto.

He was later suspended for a short time after admitting that he was using a false identity but still earned a move to Inter last year.

However, things didn¡¯t go well with the Italian giants. Especially after Hector Cuper was replaced by Alberto Zaccheroni.

Meanwhile, Reggina’s attacking options to take on Juventus are limited after Shunsuke Nakamura jetted off to Japan.

The media darling has been called out to his homeland for international duty when Japan take on Oman in a 2006 World Cup qualifier.

The match will kick off on Wednesday Feb 18 and he is expected to fly back in to the Peninsula on the 19th.

This means Nakamura will definitely miss out on Sunday’s difficult trip to Juve’s Stadio Delle Alpi.

It is a heavy blow for Coach Giancarlo Camolese, as fellow forwards David Di Michele and Roberto Stellone are struggling with fitness problems.

Former Bianconeri star Davide Baiocco is also suspended, so Camolese will be forced to reshuffle his entire squad.

Malesani calms Ballotta storm Thursday 12 February, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modena boss Alberto Malesani claims he has made peace with unhappy goalkeeper Marco Ballotta.

The veteran was furious with the decision to drop him for the Ancona game on Sunday with no prior warning.

"People shouldn¡¦t act in that way," said the 39-year-old. "Obviously the Coach has the right to make his own decisions but I just ask for respect.

"I¡¦ve been at Modena for three years, I¡¦m the captain, and I think I deserve that. He could have told me five minutes before announcing it to the rest of the squad.

"Our relationship has now changed," added the former Parma ¡¥keeper. "It will be strictly professional from now on."

The tactician has since talked to the goalkeeper in a bid to resolve the situation at the Stadio Braglia.

"Maybe we both made mistakes in this whole saga," stated the tactician. "But it needs to end here.

"We¡¦ve made peace even if I want to underline that there was little respect shown to Adriano Zanchope, who replaced Ballotta, in this whole affair."

Ballotta is set to remain on the bench for this weekend¡¦s League game at Bologna.

Malesani set for chop? Wednesday 3 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modena boss Alberto Malesani is feeling the pressure as speculation regarding his future continues.

The Gialloblu have been sucked into a relegation battle after some poor results in recent times.

Now unconfirmed reports suggest that a loss on Saturday against his former club Parma may result in the sack.

Although Modena President Romano Amadei is keen on not replacing Coaches in mid-season, defeat in Week 24 may force his hand.

Malesani only arrived at the Stadio Braglia at the start of this season after Gianni De Biasi joined Brescia.

Although Modena did have a decent start to the campaign, their form has faltered of late and they have slid down the table.

Possible candidates to take over from Malesani should he be shown the door include Giovanni Vavassori.

The latter has been unemployed since Atalanta sacked him last season, before they were relegated to Serie B.

Modena won¡¯t axe Malesani Thursday 4 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modena have dismissed speculation that they are reflecting on the future of boss Alberto Malesani.

Reports yesterday claimed that defeat against Parma on Saturday may see Malesani sacked but the club insist that is not true.

"So long as no unforeseen earthquakes take place then our plans won¡¯t change," said Vice-president Doriano Tosi.

"Modena have a clear philosophy and we are not a club that strengthens of weakens the position of a Coach based simply on results."

Malesani ignores sack talk Friday 5 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modena boss Alberto Malesani maintains that he hasn¡¯t been affected by the rumours regarding his future.

There has been speculation this week that the tactician may be axed if results don¡¯t improve but he doesn¡¯t seem overly concerned.

"I would say it has been a strange week rather than a difficult one," said the former Fiorentina boss.

"Do I feel in jeopardy? I¡¯ve been in this business for many years and I know what kind of rumours circulate.

"It already happened earlier this season after we lost twice in September. Fortunately there is a great desire to do well within my squad.

"It is very united and I maintain that they are one of the best selection of players that I have ever Coached."

The Canarini are currently sitting just above the relegation zone and Malesani¡¯s future could depend on the result against Parma on Saturday.

"It¡¯s a game where we don¡¯t have to necessarily win," stated Malesani. "We will obviously look to get three points but it won¡¯t be a decisive match for us."

Baggio ready to face Lippi Saturday 6 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Baggio has recovered from injury in order to take on his former club and aim for his 200th Serie A goal.

¡°Baggio is in good condition,¡± revealed Brescia boss Gianni De Biasi, ¡°and took part in training with quite extraordinary enthusiasm.¡±

The Divine Ponytail has been struggling with muscular and knee problems throughout the campaign.

The team managed well enough even without him, as the 37-year-old was not present when they beat Inter 3-1 at the San Siro last Sunday.

¡°I still have a few doubts with regards to the flu epidemic that swept through the squad last week,¡± added De Biasi, ¡°but most of the symptoms have now gone.¡±

Baggio could become only the fifth player in Serie A history to score 200 goals after Silvio Piola, Gunnar Nordahl, Jose Altafini and Giuseppe Meazza.

Technically, the former Fiorentina, Milan, Bologna and Inter man has already surpassed that tally, but his play-off goals are not included.

Marcello Lippi famously did not get along with Baggio during their years at Juventus and when asked about that rapport the Bianconeri boss walked out of yesterday¡¯s press conference.

¡°I understand where he is coming from,¡± said De Biasi. ¡°If I was asked the same question for several years I¡¯d have walked out too.¡±

Final: Modena 2-2 Parma...

Malesani regrets sharing points Saturday 6 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alberto Malesani and Cesare Prandelli admit a draw was the right result in today¡¯s derby match, but both are ruing missed chances.

¡°Overall I suppose that a share of the points was the right way to end it,¡± confessed Modena boss Malesani after the 2-2 draw.

¡°We both had chances to win it, but there is a great deal of disappointment and regret at conceding an equaliser so close to the final whistle.¡±

The former Parma Coach is under fire after the team slipped to the edge of the relegation zone.

¡°We played, as always, with a lot of character and were punished once again by a single incident.¡±

Cesare Prandelli was content with the result and his side¡¯s reaction to grab a 2-2 draw in the dying minutes.

¡°It was a really great derby game,¡± commented the Parma boss, ¡°and both teams could have taken all three points.¡±

It was also important to get a result following their UEFA Cup exit in Turkey midweek.

¡°The lads had a great reaction to recent events, especially considering it was their fifth game in 15 days. Sometimes we can be a little too rushed in front of goal, but the team is young and can still improve.¡±

Alberto Gilardino is on fine form and opened the scoring, but his thoughts were for teammate Matteo Ferrari.

¡°I am very happy with the result,¡± said the hitman, ¡°but above all with the fact that Ferrari scored the equaliser. He¡¯s a great player and really deserved it.¡±

Parma could have netted another when Gilardino cut across for Mark Bresciano, but he insists there are no regrets.

¡°I saw him unmarked and the goalkeeper had closed down by side of the net. I would do the same thing again.¡±

There are rumours of a summer switch to Juventus and perhaps even a late inclusion in the Euro 2004 squad, but he is keeping his feet on the ground.

¡°To play for the Azzurri is a dream for every young player,¡± noted Gilardino, ¡°but I am only concentrating on the European Under-21 Championships this summer.¡±

Final: Brescia 2-3 Juventus...

Bitter Brescia slam ref Saturday 6 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marcello Lippi praised his men for recovering from 2-0 down, but Gianni De Biasi bitterly criticised the referee for two dubious goals.

¡°Brescia certainly did well to make the most of their first half performance,¡± said Lippi, ¡°but in all honesty that wasn¡¯t Juventus out there.¡±

¡°We played without heart and soul, above all without taking the initiative and Juve cannot afford to sit back.¡±

They went into the half-time break 2-0 down, but a flurry of goals saw the Bianconeri emerge victorious.

¡°The second half was just another team entirely that took risks, although certainly those two goals in 120 seconds were a tough blow for Brescia. We kept going even after that and played football at last.¡±

¡°I wanted a more aggressive performance and asked the players to be more assertive in all areas of the field.¡±

Juventus got back into the game when Fabrizio Miccoli converted a penalty, even if it took three attempts to get it on the scoresheet.

¡°Miccoli did very well to keep his cool,¡± noted Lippi, ¡°but from the bench I couldn¡¯t really tell what was wrong with the other two. It certainly wasn¡¯t easy to score all three penalties in a row.¡±

This match did highlight a recent problem also seen against Ancona and Deportivo La Coruna of difficult starts to their performances.

¡°There does seem to be a problem at the start, but I pledge we will work on that aspect of the game. At least our qualities do emerge over the 90 minutes, but we need to have more self-belief.¡±

The atmosphere in the Brescia camp was understandably sombre after this controversial 3-2 home defeat.

¡°We certainly out-played Juve in the first half and fully deserved to be two goals up after 45 minutes,¡± insisted Gianni De Biasi.

¡°Our regrets are obviously linked to that second period that was also affected by certain incidents I don¡¯t wish to comment on. I shall only say that Brescia were superior on all levels, both in terms of tactics and character, but the game was reopened by a very soft penalty indeed.¡±

At the dawn of the second half Gigi Di Biagio was punished for a slight nudge on Pavel Nedved.

¡°If this push had taken place at the other end of the field then a penalty would never have been awarded,¡± sniped the Brescia boss. ¡°It¡¯s a joke.¡±

There are also doubts over Marco Di Vaio¡¯s goal as he appeared to be offside when Miccoli flicked on the pass ¨C something the scorer himself admitted.

¡°It was offside and there are no doubts about it,¡± continued an irate De Biasi. ¡°To concede two dubious goals in the space of 120 seconds will inevitably hit a team psychologically. Unfortunately these incidents always make the difference in favour of the big clubs.¡±

Pavel Nedved¡¯s five-day holiday evidently helped him rediscover his form and a winning goal at the Stadio Rigamonti.

¡°I have always given 100 per cent in every game, even when I didn¡¯t have much petrol left in the tank,¡± assured the Balon d¡¯Or winner.

¡°This performance showed everyone just what Juventus represents. This is the Bianconeri character that never gives in no matter what the situation.¡±

Bologna-Lazio snowed off Sunday 7 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today¡¯s match at the Stadio Dall¡¯Ara has officially been called off because of heavy snowfall in the area.

The adverse weather conditions began last night and continued all the way through to the morning, making play on this surface impossible.

Bologna and Lazio were set to kick-off their Serie A Week 24 tie at 3pm local time, 2pm in the UK.

There is currently no news as to when the game can be replayed, but an early indication suggests it will be on Monday afternoon.

Referee Messina and his assistants will examine the pitch again at 3pm, although it may well take time with 20 centimetres of snow covering the protective sheets over the field.

Bologna-Lazio rearranged
Monday 8 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Italian Football League have set a date for the Bologna - Lazio tie after it was postponed yesterday.

The Week 24 Stadio Dall'Ara clash was called off after heavy snowfall hit the region over the weekend.

The two teams have met and agreed that the tie will now be played on Thursday 25 March. It will kick-off at 20.30 local time.

It’s also been confirmed that the Serie B clash between Salernitana and Piacenza will now take place on Wednesday 7 April.

The Week 31 tie was suspended after 12 minutes yesterday as the heavy rain made the pitch unplayable.
