A bit of R & R is usually taken to signify rest and relaxation, but to Serie A fans this week it can only mean Reggina versus Roma. Both teams will no doubt be tired after the midweek games, which were indicative of where Reggina and Roma are headed this season.

Reggina had a chance to get off the bottom of the table when they travelled to fellow strugglers Torino on Wednesday. They drew 0-0 and are now five points away from safety. Having sacked their Coach and then brought him back, nothing has changed.

Reggina are paying for selling their best players every summer. Two years ago they got rid of Rolando Bianchi. Last June they parted with Nicola Amoruso. And while Reggina have a good scorer in Bernardo Corradi, they remain a toothless team.

The Calabrian outfit have scored just 17 goals in 21 games and conceded 38. Those figures cry out relegation. Roma’s, on the other hand, are full of promise. The Giallorossi have won their last three games and are in fifth place, a single point outside the Champions League places.

Roma’s rise has been spectacular especially when you consider they collected just eight points from their first 10 games of the season. In their last 10 games, they have taken 26 from a possible 30. Back in November, finishing in fourth place became a sorry season’s primary objective. It’s now the minimum they expect to achieve.

Let’s be cautious, though. While Roma have improved and Francesco Totti is back, there are still significant chinks in their armour. The Giallorossi are a work in progress. Coach Luciano Spalletti is gradually weaning the team off the 4-2-3-1 formation and introducing a diamond in midfield.

Alberto Aquilani was placed at the top of that diamond on Wednesday and struggled. Simone Perrotta was later moved there and did well. He should start in that position this weekend. Roma also have a habit of slipping up against small provincial teams.

They lost the championship last season at Livorno and Catania, have a habit of lapsing in concentration and are a frail squad. So Reggina have a slight chance against Roma. If they perform as they did against Inter earlier in the season, then the Giallorossi could return to Roma empty handed.

Keep an eye on: Francesco Totti (Roma) – “No Totti, No Party” reads a banner in the Curva Sud and quite right, too. While statistics show that Roma perform ever so slightly better without Totti, the Giallorossi are not the same when he isn’t in the team. Returning in miraculously quick time from a debilitating thigh injury on Wednesday, Totti not only started but also scored.

Last season: Reggina 0-2 Roma

Form guide: Reggina (D L L L D) Roma (L D W W W)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Reggina (probable): Campagnolo; Lanzaro, Valdez, Santos; Krajcik, Barreto, Cozza, Carmona, Costa; Cerravolo, Corradi

Roma (probable): Doni; Cicinho, Mexes, Juan, Riise; Taddei, De Rossi, Brighi; Pizarro; Totti, Vucinic

This game a perfect chance for routine Roma's fcuk up. Three wins a row, players getting big heads then away to relegation struggler.. can't really be that optimistic.

Is Tonetto fit enough to start? Otherwise I think Taddei is the only option for it. He did a decent job in the last 10 min against Inter in the coppa.

We need a BIG game from Vuci and the CB due. Let's hope Menez has a trick or two up his sleeve too.

Reggina has usually been a tough place to play for us but if the team can keep their shape and play like they know it should result in 3 points for Roma.

Just noticed that's if win we are only 4 points from 2nd place. C'mon let's aim high and win in that crappy pitch. Ain't gonna be pretty but it is doable.

Reggina appear to have some absences also. It has been raining heavily in Reggio di Calabria but the game is on at the moment.

Vucinic is out. Okaka will start. With Baptista, Totti and Vucinic out, we need something special to happen for us to grab all 3 points. This on a rainy pitch..
