Gossip regarding the future of Mehmet Scholl continues to mount. It is as yet unclear whether the attacking midfield player will be leaving Bayern Munich for Spain and Real Madrid.

What is certain is that Scholl has wanted to play outside Germany for the last few years.

Scholl, who has a contract with the Munich giants until 2002, is currently revealing very little about his future prospects and was reported as saying he knew nothing.

However, when asked if his adviser Norbert Pflippen had a deal in the pipeline Scholl refused to comment.

Real Madrid are reported to have offered around DM15 million (€7.5m) for the player. They would, though, only be interested in the German international if they failed to land their first choice, Olympic Marseille’s Robert Pires.

In order to recoup some much needed cash, Real want to offload 33 year-old German goalkeeper Bodo Illgner, currently only third-choice ‘keeper at the club. “We would also consider loaning him out to another club,” said Real’s sports director Pirri.

Just a few weeks ago Madrid had stated that they were only interested in a permanent deal regarding the former German international. Since that time, however, Schalke 04 have shown an interest in Illgner as their first choice signing, Borussia Dortmund’s Jens Lehmann, is unable to join Schalke until 2001.

On the other hand Schalke’s manager Assauer has regarded the speculation on Illgner’s move as ‘nonesense´.
