Scholes set to miss World Cup

By Eli Shvidler

England midfielder Paul Scholes looks set to miss the World Cup because FIFA has denied him permission to use an asthma inhaler that contains the banned substance salbutamol.

The England team's medical staff asked world governing body FIFA's medical committee to allow Scholes to use the inhaler - which he has been using for years to overcome his chronic asthma condition - and provided reams of documents backing up their request. In the meantime, however, FIFA has not been convinced by the England team's arguments, and is still insisting that there is no medical justification for granting the player permission.

England officials assumed that a simple letter to FIFA - written by either the team doctor or a specialist - explaining Scholes' situation would be enough. They were stunned when they learned that it was not, and now Scholes could face a FIFA ban.

Sources in the England team are reported to be furious with Scholes' club Manchester United. They say it concealed information about the player's condition and did not provide the team's doctors with detailed reports.

I can't believe that. That would be another example of how FIFA is an organization that's sick to its core.

I use an asthma spray myself, when I play in the summer because the grass pollen makes me unable to breathe properly. I don't know if it's the same Scholes takes it for, but if he has to play without it..... He will be unable to play a full game and will possibly have an allergic reaction.

He takes it to be able to play on the same level as others, not to improve his performance.

It wasn't a problem during the last WC98 or Euro2000 so what the heck happened now?

Where is the report from? It's not on the BBC website or on Skysports.

I'll hold off until I see them report on it first;)

Hey is this some big joke. Your chances from getting out of the group stage looks difficult. Though it was never easy, it is a major set back to ur chances.

It seems the England team is doomed for failure. Hope my words don't come true, would like to watch good teams go to the quater-finals.

Cheers

I think it is some big joke, none of the major sites have it, and even that joke of a site teamtalk doesn't report on it:D
