Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel is believed to be preparing the ground for his new club, Sporting Lisbon, to make a bid for Old Trafford midfielder Nicky Butt.

The Portuguese champions are reportedly interested in taking the 25-year-old to Portugal in a £5 million deal.

Helped by Schmeichel, Sporting won their first title for 17 years last season and the big Dane is said to have convinced the club's management that Butt would be a major asset in their Champions' League campaign.

A key member of United's famous 1992 youth team, which included David Beckham and Paul Scholes, Butt rarely gets a chance in the first team after injuries and suspensions interrupted his progress.

Alex Ferguson's rotation policy meant his longest run in the side was five matches last season.

Sporting Lisbon are said to have switched their attention to Butt after failing to lure Teddy Sheringham from Old Trafford. Butt, who is a long-term target of Sunderland boss Peter Reid, has five years left on a seven-year contract.
