German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund appointed former European Footballer of the Year Matthias Sammer as coach on a two-year contract.

Sammer, 32, replaced Udo Lattek, who resigned last week after taking over from Bernd Krauss on April 13 with five matches of the season remaining.

Sammer worked as an assistant coach to Lattek as Dortmund avoided relegation from German soccer's top division by winning eight points from its last five matches. Sammer said he'd be seeking continuity at the 1997 European champion.

``What's important is that the squad will be working as a team,'' Sammer said. ``Character and quality are the basis for success.''

Sammer, whose playing career was cut short by a knee operation in October 1997, joined Borussia Dortmund in January 1993 from Inter Milan of Italy. He played 71 times for Germany and made 23 appearances for the former East German national team.
