Ex-Argentina coach Menotti takes charge at Independiente

By Luis Ampuero

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 27 (Reuters) -

Cesar Luis Menotti, the chain-smoking coach who led Argentina to their first World Cup victory in 1978, has taken over for a third stint at Independiente.

"I'm returning to a place for which I have great affection," the 66-year-old told reporters after agreeing terms with the club.

"I'm very happy."

Menotti, known as El Flaco (The Thin Man) has not coached since being fired by provincial club Rosario Central just over two years ago.

Independiente, who have struggled since winning the Apertura championship in 2002, chose Menotti after unsuccessful approaches to former Argentina coach Daniel Passarella, 1986 World Cup striker Jorge Burruchaga and 1978 World Cup midfielder Americo Gallego.

They finished 15th in the Apertura championship held in the second half of this year.

Menotti replaced former Argentine and Fiorentina forward Daniel Bertoni, who took over in August following the death of Jose "Pato" Pastoriza but resigned less than four months later.

Youth team coach Pedro Monzon had been in charge on an interim basis for the last month.

"It's been a cruel year for Independiente," said Menotti.

Since the 1978 World Cup, Menotti has coached the Mexican national team, Argentine clubs Boca Juniors twice and River Plate once, Uruguay's Penarol, Italy's Sampdoria and Spain's Barcelona.

Menotti, an exponent of attacking football, has been credited with revolutionising Argentine football during the 1970s but his magic touch appears to have faded in the last few years.

He lasted only seven months at Sampdoria in 1997 and eight months in Independiente in 1999.

His next job was at Central, the club where he began his playing career more than 40 years ago, in 2002 where he was in charge for five months.

Peru's Cienciano sign Valencia as new coach

LIMA, Peru, Dec 30 (Reuters)

- Peru's Cienciano, who last year became the first club from the country to win an international competition, have named Wilmar Valencia as their new coach.

"We decided to go for Valencia because he's young and he showed his ability when he was at Sporting Cristal and they won the Apertura championship in 2003," Cienciano President Juvenal Silva said.

Valencia is currently youth team coach at Alianza Lima.

Freddy Ternero, who made history last year as he led the club to the Copa Sudamericana title, is leaving the club for personal reasons.

Cienciano, based in the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco and dubbed the "red fury," also beat Argentina's Boca Juniors on penalties this year to win the South American Recopa the playoff between the Sudamericana and Libertadores winners.

Cienciano finished third in this year's league championship.

I thought it might have been an award in the style of Sweden or Portugual's "Player of the Year" where they give it to a guy born in their country regardless of where he plays.

Obviously not. :D

Caldas keeper Henao joins Santos

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 6 (Reuters) -

Colombia goalkeeper Juan Carlos Henao, who played a key role as provincial upstarts Once Caldas won last year's South American Libertadores Cup, has joined Brazilian champions Santos.
Henao, 33, who also played for his country in last year's Copa America in Peru, has signed a one-year contract, Santos said on their official website.

Henao, who has spent more than 10 years of his career with the Manizales-based club, conceded only four goals in eight games in the knockout stages of the last year's Libertadores.

He also saved two penalties as Caldas beat Boca Juniors of Argentina in a shootout to win the final. Santos were among Caldas's victims, losing a quarter-final meeting 2-1 on aggregate.

Boca new shirts same as River Plate's :nono:

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 12 (Reuters) -

Boca Juniors have raised eyebrows in Argentina by unveiling a new shirt with an almost identical design :dontcare: to arch-rivals River Plate.
The new kit consists of a yellow diagonal stripe on a blue background instead of the usual horizontal hoop.

River use a red diagonal stripe on white background, a design which they say is unchanged since 1901.

Boca president Mauricio Macri said the diagonal stripe, based on a design dating back to 1907, would only be used in this month's pre-season tournaments.

'Now, everyone's going to know about other shirts in the club's history, their changes and evolutions,' he said. 'We have to accept it because we are remembering our history.'

River Plate director Mario Israel retorted: 'They know what's good for them at Boca. River would never use a shirt with a horizontal stripe.'

Corinthians sign Porto's Carlos Alberto

Brian Homewood

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Forward Carlos Alberto completed his move to Brazilian club Corinthians from European champions Porto on Friday.
The 20-year-old, who scored the first goal in Porto's 3-0 Champions League final win over Monaco in May, is the latest addition for the Sao Paulo club since their controversial partnership deal with London-based Media Sports Investments (MSI).

'I like to win championships, that's why I came to Corinthians,' he told reporters before taking part in his first training session.

He celebrated his arrival by dismissing his former host nation Portugal as 'an egg' and saying that the Corinthians support was more numerous than the entire Portuguese population.

'I liked the idea of returning to Brazil, playing in a team of the masses and being closer to the national team,' he told the Estado de Sao Paulo in an interview published on Friday.

'Porto's directors need to know that Portugal is an egg compared to Rio de Janeiro,' said Carlos Alberto, who began his career with Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro.

'The Corinthians support is bigger than the entire Portuguese population.'

Corinthians claim to have more than 20 million supporters although their average home attendance in last year's Brazilian championship was less than 14,000.

Brazilian media said that MSI paid 7 million euros ($9.17 million) for Carlos Alberto, who has signed a four-year contract.

MSI signed a 10-year deal with Corinthians in December, promising an immediate cash injection of $35 million. In return, they will keep 51 percent of future profits.

Corinthians have already signed 20-year-old Argentina forward Carlos Tevez for a $18 million from Boca Juniors, a record signing between two south American clubs, and defender Sebastian Dominguez from Argentine champions Newell's Old Boys.

MSI and Corinthians are also in talks with CSKA Moscow forward Vagner Love, who wants to return home after only six months of his four-year contract with the Russians.

Romario trains with Vasco da Gama

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Former Brazil World Cup striker Romario, who has been without a club since being sacked by Fluminense in October, trained with Vasco da Gama on Monday, increasing speculation that he will extend his career.
Romario, who will be 39 at the end of this month, said on Friday that he is 90 percent certain to sign for Vasco, the club where he began his career.

Brazilian media said he is expected to finalise the deal on Wednesday and play in the Carioca championship, one of the regional competitions which form the prelude to the Brazilian season.

'I've told Romario that he's the man,' Vasco coach Joel Santana told reporters. 'Physically, he's in good shape. He trained normally and did everything the others did.'

Romario had a miserable last season at Fluminense, where he fell out with his coaches, was dogged by injury and involved in controversy over his much-publicised privileges.

Many Brazilians, including Pele, have urged the former Barcelona, Valencia and PSV Eindhoven to call it a day, saying that he is in danger of spoiling a career which included winning the 1994 World Cup.

Romario angrily retorted on Friday, telling Pele to put a shoe in his mouth before apologising the day after.

The Carioca championship, in which most of the 12 teams are small, semi-professional outfits, could provide the ideal chance for Romario to finish on a high.

Corinthians slump to opening defeat

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Corinthians, who have already spent more than $25 million on reinforcements and are looking for more, were humbled 2-1 at home by Mogi Mirim in the opening game of the season after resting their new signings.
The Paulista championship match began in a festive atmosphere on Wednesday night as Argentine forward Carlos Tevez, former Porto midfielder Carlos Alberto and defender Sebastian Dominguez were presented to the supporters at the Pacaembu.

But after the newcomers retired to the stands, the Corinthians side which struggled through last season took to the field and normal service was resumed.

Mogi Mirim, one of the unfashionable, semi-professional outfits who make up the numbers in the regional contest which serves as a prelude to the Brazilian championship, raced to a 2-0 lead with two goals from 22-year-old striker Neto.

Corinthians pulled one back through 17-year-old striker Jo in the second half but were unable to find an equaliser.

Corinthians, one of Brazil's most popular clubs, became rich overnight after signing a ten-year partnership with London-based Media Sports Investments (MSI) at the end of last year.

Their top signing was 20-year-old Argentine prodigy Tevez who arrived from Boca Juniors for $18 million, a record between two South American clubs.

The club are hoping to add Vagner Love, currently with CSKA Moscow, and Argentine international midfielder Javier Mascherano to their team.

The team only began pre-season training last week and coach Tite decided the newcomers were not match fit.

Brazil goalkeeper Marcos, who has recovered from surgery on an injured hand which kept him out of action for seven months, was forced to wait for his comeback as Palmeiras visited Internacional Limeira for the championship's opening game.

Palmeiras coach Estevam Soares gave the goalkeeper's jersey to Sergio, who played in Marcos's absence last season.

Palmeiras led 2-0, then trailed 3-2 before finally winning 5-3.

Robinho scores twice as Santos cruise

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Santos forward Robinho scored twice as the Brazilian champions began the season by demolishing Portuguesa 5-1.

Robinho's strike partner Deivid grabbed a hat-trick as new Santos coach Oswaldo de Oliveira enjoyed a winning start in Thursday's Paulista championship match.

Oliveira replaced Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who took charge of Real Madrid last month after leading Santos to the Brazilian title.

There is widespread speculation that 20-year-old Robinho, one of Brazil's most exciting players, could follow him to the Bernabeu later this year.

Former Brazil futsal (indoor football) international Falcao made a brief debut in Sao Paulo's 4-2 win over Ituano. Falcao, a surprise close-season signing, played the last nine minutes of the game and got a mixed review from coach Emerson Leao.

"Falcao showed with his first two or three touches that he has a lot of quality," Leao said. "But he needs to get used to individual marking. Once they stuck a marker on him, he didn't get a look in."

New coach for struggling Flamengo

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Flamengo, who claim to be Brazil's most popular club, named Cuca as their new coach on Thursday, 12 hours after sacking Julio Cesar Leal who had been in charge for four games.
Flamengo director Gerson Biscotto said Cuca would take over in time for Saturday's 'Fla-Flu' derby against Fluminense, which has been rendered meaningless as both sides have already been knocked out of the Carioca championship's first stage.

Cuca last year led Sao Paulo to the semifinals of the South American Libertadores Cup, was later fired and had a brief spell in charge of Gremio.

The club also unveiled a new shirt to use in the rest of the Carioca championship, which serves as a prelude to the Brazilian championship.

It is the same red and black hooped design as the original but the colours have been inverted, with black sleeves instead of red ones.

Leal was fired after Flamengo suffered three humiliating defeats against unrated Olaria, Cabofriense and Americano, none of whom play in the Brazilian first division.

The once great club have struggled in recent years following chaotic administration, which included the impeachment of one club president, and severe financial difficulties.

Flamengo used four coaches last year as they narrowly avoided relegation.

Carlos Alberto off as Corinthians win

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Carlos Tevez scored twice to help Corinthians beat Rio Branco-Americana 3-1 in Brazil's Paulista championship on Thursday, despite having former Porto midfielder Carlos Alberto sent off.
Argentina forward Tevez, who cost a South American record fee of $18 million when he joined from Boca Juniors in December, put his side ahead in the 12th minute with a left-foot shot which deflected off a defender.

The 21-year-old, who grabbed his first goal for his new club last Saturday, put the finishing touch to Corinthians's fourth consecutive win in the tournament when he stroked the ball into an empty net in injury time.

In between, Corinthians, who spent $25 million on close-season signings following their partnership with a London-based group of investors, struggled to overcome unfashionable provincial opponents.

Carlos Alberto, their other high-profile signing, received his marching orders early in the second half when he was booked for diving in the penalty area before earning another yellow card for protesting against the decision.

Rio Branco equalised soon after when striker Le broke clear of the defence. But with the visitors threatening to take control, teenager Dinelson scored with a 25-metre drive in the 69th minute.

Corinthians climbed to fourth place with 12 points from six games, four adrift of leaders Sao Paulo.

Brazilian champions Santos missed a chance to go level on points with Sao Paulo when they were held to a goalless draw by 10-man Guarani, who had midfielder Serginho sent off in the 36th minute for a second bookable offence.
