Liga Preview: Atletico Madrid-Sevilla
3/5/2005 10:14:00 AM
This weekend two sides chasing European places in La Liga come face to face as Atletico Madrid take on Sevilla at the Vincente Calderon.

BACKGROUND
Lying seventh in La Liga, Atletico Madrid have been at their inconsistent best this season, At home they are a formidable outfit (only Real Madrid have left the Calderon with all three points this season), yet despite February’s memorable
victory in the Nou Camp it has been Atletico’s poor away form (only two wins all season) which has stopped them from making a sustained challenge for the Champions League places.

Sevilla are flying this season. Sitting pretty in fourth place in La Liga and still in the Uefa cup. The Andalucians have exceeded most people’s expectations already and must now feel that Champions League football is within their reach. The highlight so far must be the 1-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

CURRENT FORM

Atletico Madrid
W D L W L

Atletico’s Current form has been mixed with two wins, two defeats and a draw in their last five game. After a fantastic 2-0 win over Barcelona it was thought that the capital side had hit some form , however subsequent poor performances including a home draw to lowly Levante + defeats to Racing Santander and Villarreal have dampened the mood a little.

Sevilla
W W L D D

Sevilla’s form coming in to this game is also a little shaky. The resumption of the Uefa Cup has coincided with a dip in Sevilla’s league form (no wins since the return of the Uefa Cup tells its own story), which begs the question can a squad the size of Sevilla’s cope with the demands of two games per week? Time will tell on that score.

EARLIER THIS SEASON……
When Atletico travelled to Sevilla earlier in the season they left empty handed. Goals from Ocio and Baptista gave Sevilla a 2-1 win, Ibanez got a late consolation goal for Atletico.

TEAM NEWS
Atletico were dealt a major blow this week when Argentine playmaker Ariel Ibagaza was ruled out for up to a month with a torn muscle in his left leg. Jorge Larena or Richard Nunez will replace him in the starting line up. Also out are Carlos Aguilera (leg) and Luis Perea (suspension). Veteran full back Sergi returns.

Sevilla travel to Madrid without the injured duo of Aito Ocio and Jesus Navas while Feronando Salas is a major doubt. Daniel Alves misses out though suspension.

COACH’S VIEW
Atletico’s coach Cesar Fernando has gone on record to say that his side must win in Sevilla if they are to move forward in the hunt for the European places. “The Sevilla match is like a final to us now, if we want to close on the European places we simple must win” said the Rojiblanco boss.

Sevilla’s coach Joaquin Capparros believes that a tight defensive unit will be the key to victory. “Its all down to us now, If we can tighten up there I’m sure we will get a result in Madrid.” The Sevilla boss is in confident mood going in to this crunch match.

STAR PLAYERS

Fernando Torres
England has Wayne Rooney, Italy has Antonio Cassano and Spain has Fernando Torres. The Atletico Madrid wonder kid has 12 goals to his name this season including both in the 2-0 win in the Nou Camp. How long before Torres take Raul’s crown as the Golden Boy of the Spanish game. Sevilla be warned, this boy is special.

Juilo Baptista
The Brazilian has been outstanding this season with 13 goals already, he got the goal that beat Real Madrid in December, can he do the same to their city rivals? Could be set for a big money move this summer.

PROBABLE STARTING XIs

Atlectico Madrid
3-5-2
Franco, Velasco, Lopz, Calvo, Sergi, Pablo, Colsa, Sosa, Gronkjaer, Torres, Salva.

Sevilla
4-4-1-1
Esteban, Navvaro, David, Alfaro, Ramos, Alves, Renato, Jesuil, Jordi, Antonito, Baptista.

I dont understand Atletico. At home they are just a force to be reckoned with and always look really sharp but on the road, its the complete opposite. It must be really frustrating. You are managing to make a good Sevilla side like an amateur team but last week you last to Santander :wallbang:

By the way this Antonio Lopez is having himself some half, 2 assists and a beauty of a goal. What a scissor kick !
