CAPELLO TO MAKE CHANGES?
May 13 2002

When Emerson arrived to Roma, in the summer of 2000, Capello in the retreat of Kapfenberg was planning something special, a change in tactics: playing with four defenders, three midfielders, a supporting striker and two attackers. A clear change in respect to the usual 3-4-1-2 which the year before brought Roma to sixth place. The motive of the new change? The arrival of Batistuta? Actually not. It was the presence of a player like Emerson. That is, an element that is able technically and strong in the phase of tackling. After a couple of weeks however, Capello was forced to change the formation and abandon his new idea: Emerson got injured in training, therefore out for months and Roma was brought again to the 3-4-1-2. Even if Capello explained on more than one occasion that in the year of their third scudetto, Roma played with a 4-4-2 which was able to change to a 3-3-3-1 in the phase of possession of the ball, with Cafu and Delvecchio the alleys and Totti on the shoulders of the attackers in a supporting role.

Analyzing however recently, from what is going on during these transfer days, Capello is giving the sensation that, with two years tardiness, he wants to resurrect his old project. That is, with a team with four defenders in a line, three midfielders plus Totti and two attackers. Saying this, it will be very difficult to have the energy to bring over the Dutchman Davids and without losing players like Tommasi and Lima, why? Because playing with three midfielder plus a supporting player and two attackers, there is the necessity that the midfield be constructed of tacklers, ball winners, and good ones. Question: a midfield formed of Emerson, Tommasi and Davids wouldn't be ideal? Considering that the alternative of Davids, should the deal not be done, is his compatriot Vam Bommel, another type of player full of fight, the feeling is that the next tactical change will likely be the above mentioned. Without thinking about the certain purchase of Guardiola.

And then, Cafu. The Brazilian is tied with Roma with a contract that will expire in June of 2003 and in the balance is the player and the Society over a possible negotiation of an extended contract. This is why that voices are going around that 'Pendolino' may be sold, even because with his contract Roma will lose him gaining zero money, essentially for free. What does this all mean? So with the 4-3-1-2 formation Cafu will have a difficult time finding space. Because Capello doesn't consider him a defender, and therefore on the line of four defenders he cannot stay, and because the Brazilian is not a tackling midfielder. Essentially, Cafu will not have a spot. And this will help (perhaps) to understand why Roma are dragging out his contract talks.

Then considering that Capello will have at his disposal Montella, confirming Cassano, Batistuta and Delvecchio, and looking for Adriano. And then seeing that Totti's spot is locked, it's complicated to think that Capello will send on the field together with the Captain only one striker, leaving on the bench four players of great quality. Or then again it may be said that they may be touching up Roma's attacking force. And in defense? Panucci on the right, Candela on the left and Samuel one of the two central defenders. The other? Dellas, at the moment. But Roma are looking to find another. And in the next few days Roma will be deciding the fate of AC Zago and Aldair.

Capello making these tactical changes for the upcoming year means the Doni rumors don't make sense because he would not find room as a starter in a 4-3-1-2 formation just like Cafu wouldn't find room either in a 4-3-1-2 formation.

Plus if you add to this the fact that Cafu is already 32 years old, him being sold this summer is not a far fetched idea. I could see it happening because of his age, the club wanting to get something from his sale before he becomes a free agent in June 2003 and because him not fitting in the 4-3-1-2 lineup.
