Roma swoop for Van Hooijdonk Friday 10 May, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma have shown interest in Feyenoord star Pierre Van Hooijdonk.

The midfielder is fresh from UEFA Cup glory as two of the Dutch side’s three goals in the 3-2 Final win over Borussia Dortmund came from his boot.

Now the Giallorossi hope to snatch him away from his homeland with an offer of Ivan Tomic plus cash.

Van Hooijdonk shot to fame with Celtic before making an impact with Nottingham Forrest and Portuguese side Benfica.

The free kick specialist could be one of the six major reinforcements announced by Roma President Franco Sensi.

The others are Palermo midfielder Davide Bombardini, Perugia’s Greek defender Traianos Dellas and Christian Panucci – who turned his loan from Monaco into a permanent move.

Talks are also on for Brescia veteran Pep Guardiola – a two-year contract should be signed next week – and Inter striker Adriano.

Cristiano Doni is likely to switch to the Stadio Olimpico next season, while Fiorentina’s Angelo Di Livio is another rumoured contender.

Van Hooijdonk is a striker and definitely not a midfielder. Furthermore, I can not believe Roma would want to pay millions of euros for a 31 year old.
