I don't know if you ever had a thread about it. FMs, feel free to merge it, if so.

In the last few days, the Spanish media has talked a lot about the Serbian football. As you know, people like Radomir Antic or Pedja Mijatovic are La Liga legends and they're great ambassadors of your football.

I didn't know that the Partizan and Red Star fans, at least the ultras, bring their rivalry to the NT. For example, the Spanish radio said that, when Milosevic was replaced by Ilic, the Red Star fans didn't clap these players. Why does it happen? I mean, this is not a Partizan vs Red Star thing, it's Serbia who is playing.

As you know, the "Barça vs Madrid" rivalry is also huge, but the fans of both teams support the rival's players when they play for Spain.

Anyway... the question is: Can anyone tell me about this rivalry? Why does all this happen? Which are the roots of this rivalry? I don't pretend to mess here, I'm just looking for anwsers as objective as possible.

Ah... one more thing. Why did the fans boo the national anthem? I guess that it's related to politics, so if you don't feel like talking about it, forget it.

As I've said, I don't want to mess here. I don't know how hot are these issues, forgive my ignorance.

Thanx :)

OK, here's the synopsis:

When Yugoslavia fractured in 1992, Serbia & Montenegro decided to keep the name "Yugoslavia" (for purely monetary/interest reasons, to keep it short) as well as the flag (without the communist star though) and the old Yugoslav anthem "Hej Sloveni" (Hey Slavs). Now most of the people, including of course the nationalistic ultras, wanted the name of the country to be Serbia and the anthem to be different. They saw "Hej Sloveni" as a symbol of the old communist regime (even though the song is not communist in itself) and more even as the symbol of Milosevic's regime, and that is why the anthem was booed throughout the 90s, as a political protest against Milosevic.

In 2003, the name was changed to Serbia & Montenegro, but a new anthem was not decided solely because the politicians (not to get into details) can't agree on what it should be. So, you can interpret the whistling of the anthem nowadays as a voicing of frustration towards the politicians, or simply as a continutation of a 90s tradition against a disliked symbol.

That's why today, they played another song after the anthem, a sort of semi-anthem which is acceptable to the fans.

If they just weren't clapping that's an improvement. They usually boo and whistle when players of the rival team have the ball. That goes for both sets of fans to be fair.

"Mars na Drinu". Or that's what they said they will play, I don't know if they did - I missed the first half.

I think it's ridiculous that the rivalry is brought to NT games. I really don't see the point in it. Of course there are not many rivalries that match this one but it's probably a lot more to do with the sort of people that we are.

While listening to the game, I thought there was a round of applause for the substitution when Milosevic came off for Ilic as there was for when Kezman came off.

They played it before the anthem and there was also a huge banner that said, u boj krenite junaci!

Koeman, Andrija basically told you what it's about. This was the first match since we came back into international football that we had organized support from ultras on our own soil. Abroad that's not a problem as there are always immigrants who show up in large numbers. But the anthem, flag and name always remained an obstacle for domestic fans.

Red Star's ultras, wellknown around the planet under the name delije, still boycott the NT, until everything gets changed, most other groups did the same until recently. Some inviduals do go, but not as a group.

The Red Star-Partizan rivalry is called the 'eternal derby'. And because the fans of these clubs have always been on other sides, they don't know how to support a team together and plenty of them just refuse to do so. For instance Milosevic and Kezman get stick from RS fans and Stankovic from Partizan's fans.

This rivalry is very much evident on this board as well, ie. Drulo always gives Kezman stick :D ;)

:D

I never want to hear about Keza's finishing again, he's a choker, the end!

But as much as I love Deki, I was realistic and extremely dissapointed with his performance last night.

He really should of just slid it across the ground underneath the goal keeper instead of trying to lift it over him. I'd rather of had Djordjevic or Deki in that position and believe they would have scored. He simply doesn't know how to choose the right way to finish in each situation.

Nice article about Rivalry - sorry Koeman its in Serbian but basically players say that they get along well regardless of their club (partizan/red star)

Well in the early 90s "Mars na Drinu" (w/out words I think) became the official anthem of the Republic of Serbia (not to be confused with Yugoslavia/Serbia&Montenegro) and technically it still is, although now the "recommended" anthem is "Boze pravde". Just like the old communist coat of arms is still technically official but the "recommended" one is with the eagle & the cross...ah the connundrum of Serbian legal regulations :googly: :pp

Same as in Macedonia our government still uses the communist coat of arms even though the people want and use the Lion as our coat of arms.

A very nice article, the rivalry is definitely more between the fans than the players but it's interesting how they didn't ask Sasa Ilic about it. ;)
