The Premier League champions have added to the acquisitions of Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic by signing Stoke City's Ritchie de Laet.

Richie De Laet (born 28 November 1988 in Antwerp) is a Belgian footballer. A highly-rated defender, he can play anywhere along the back four.

De Laet signed for Stoke City for an initial £100,000 fee, on 17 August 2007, from Belgian club Royal Antwerp, penning a 3-year deal.[1]

In July 2008, De Laet joined Bournemouth on trial, and played his first game in a friendly against Portsmouth, a 4-1 defeat. However, he later returned to Stoke City. In October 2008 he joined Wrexham on a one-month loan deal, making his debut in a 2-0 victory over Lewes. He made a total of three appearances during his time at the club before his loan spell was terminated in order for him to undergo a hernia operation

From wiki:

He was ridiculously signed on a performance-based contract by Manchester United on January 9th. Many though it was a joke and Andrew Marshall has agreed to do something genuinely absurd if he ever makes a Premier League appearance for the Red Devils.

Many were surprised at the transfer, which appears to hark back to his period with Royal Antwerp, a feeder club of Manchester United. Nonetheless, the fact that he had not made a single appearance for Stoke, has seen popular fans-forum RedCafe go into meltdown, with many claiming to be experts on a player that they had, up to this point, never heard of; some even likening him to United great John O'Shea, Kop crusher and Figo nutmegger.

Ultimately, it is hoped that De Laet will do for Manchester United what Belgian-born actress Audrey Hepburn did for American cinema.

:howler:

08/01/2009 11:44, Report by Adam BostockBelgian joins Reds on loanUnited have confirmed the arrival of defender Ritchie De Laet on loan from Stoke City.

The 20 year-old Belgian will stay until the end of the 2008/09 season and will play for the Reserves.

De Laet joined Stoke from Royal Antwerp in August 2007 but to date he has not featured for the first team, only being named as a substitute on several occasions.

He spent the early part of the current season on loan at non-league Wrexham, where he made three appearances in the Blue Square Premier before heading back to Stoke for surgery on a double hernia.

Well he's hardly going to say "there'll be one more signing", because then we would have got our hopes up.
