There are various reasons as to why he failed at Barcelona, not just Van Gaal. Barcelona would never have built the team around him the way Boca and Villarreal did, which is what Riquelme needs to succeed.

Fact of the matter is that he did fail, and despite doing great at Villarreal, Barcelona never had any intention of bringing him back because they knew he wouldn't succeed if they did.

Zidane was in his fifth season at Juventus compared to Riquelme in his first, so circumstances are very different.

Riquelme came in, couldn’t prove himself, and was promptly shipped out again.

He was a fantastic footballer but a step below the elite players of the time - such as the guy who replaced him at Barcelona, Ronaldinho.

Which one was worst season?

Zidane 5th season
or Riquelme 1st & only season?

Zidane had a better season, it’s not even worth debating. He was the player Juventus built their team around (like every season he played at the club) and was the best foreigner in Serie A. He finished the season earning a world record transfer to Real Madrid.

Better season like below:

2001 Champions League
Group E Final Result:

1. Deportivo La Coruña (spain)
2. Panathinaikos (GREECE) 😄
3. Hamburg (germany) (this was not Hamburg 1983 version) 😄
4. Juventus 😄😄😄😄😄

Riquelme never did this.
His team never lose in group stage
in his entire career.
Zidane at least
had 2 times lose at group stage.
(This is a fact)

Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh to Muslim.
Good day to Others.

A brief on Juan Roman Riquelme

His weakness
:
1) a slow player;
2) always walk
(not running like other footballers);
3) need to play as playmaker
to fully utilize him.

His strength:
1) expert in dominated the midfield;
2) expert in shielding the ball
(despite mostly walking than running);
3) expert in short & long pass;
4) expert in nutmeg skill;
5) expert in free kick;
6) expert in penalty kick;
7) expert in corner kick
(even scored more than 2 goals
from direct corner kicks).

This thread makes you nostalgic. Of course, there would be peoole out there still beating this dead horse. Classic strategy with quotes from other famous players too.

Zidane actually did screw up majorly in his last Juve season, though it didn't matter so much when he secured the galactic transfer in the end (and money for a few good players for Juve)

This thread is for
people that understand his style
& know how to appreciate
great player like Riquelme. 🙂

I do miss when Football was reliant on the number 10 and that type of play doing the 00s. And Riquelme was one of the best at that.

Football's too fast for me now, like pinball.
Now, new generation love seeing,
headless chicken running here & there,
trial & error tactic
in passing, shooting & dribbling.

I'm no longer interested seeing the live telecast.
The highlights in youtube
are good enough for me. 😄

Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh to Muslim.
Good day to Others.

Roman (AM/CM) Best Tournament:

8) 1999 Copa America:
4 matches
0 goal
3 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.75

7) 2005 Confederations Cup:
5 matches
3 goals
1 assist
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.80

6) 2006 World Cup:
5 matches
0 goal
4 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.80

5) 2008 Copa Libertadores:
10 matches
4 goals
5 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 0.90

4) 2009 Copa Libertadores:
7 matches
4 goals
4 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.14

3) 1997 World Youth Cup:
7 matches
4 goals
6 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.43

2) 2007 Copa America:
5 matches
5 goals
3 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.60

1) 2007 Copa Libertadores:
11 matches
8 goals
5 assists
Goal + Assist Ratio = 1.18

Why this ranked no.1
despite no.2 & 3 have higher Goal + Assist Ratio?

Cause it's hard to ignore
his world class goals here:

1) Direct corner kick goal
(Round of 16)(2nd leg)(away),

2) At edge of penalty box goal
(Final)(2nd leg)(away),

3) Solo goal
(Quarterfinal)(2nd leg)(away)

4) Free kick goal
(Final)(1st leg)(home),

5) Free kick goal
(Semifinal)(2nd leg)(home),

6) One touch goal
(Round of 16)(1st leg)(home)

Wallahu a'lam.

From another thread:

"What about De Bruyne?

According to transfermarkt, 205 assists in 536 games for club (0.382 APG). For NT, 45 assists in 88 games (0.511 APG).

He wipes the floor with Riquelme's trash numbers. Get that garbage outta here. J/k...but yeah, Riquelme's numbers don't come close."

Greatest assister of all-time

Ok. He has more assists.

What he did in CL & WC?
Still same performance
like at EPL? 🤔

Perhaps Morocco want to
send a regard.

Good day to Others.

I watch football for entertainment.

Among the entertainment was
Riquelme leading a small Villarreal team,
defeating Barcelona
with Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta & Deco,
3-0!!!

What is Riquelme's contribution here?

1) a back heel assist;
2) a free kick assist;
3) s
uccessfully control the tempo of the match
despite faced a group of world class midfielders;
4) successfully dribbled many Barca players.

At other forum,
some said,
"he never been the conductor of a
great European team."
I don't care about it. 😄

Riquelme only need a functional team
to destroy them.
