He flopped at Barcelona, but was sensational at Villarreal.

Likely that the reason is that he operates best as a big fish in a small pond.
Try to read about his story with Van Gaal.
If you are lazy,
don't bother with this thread. 😄

There are various reasons as to why he failed at Barcelona, not just Van Gaal. Barcelona would never have built the team around him the way Boca and Villarreal did, which is what Riquelme needs to succeed.

Fact of the matter is that he did fail, and despite doing great at Villarreal, Barcelona never had any intention of bringing him back because they knew he wouldn't succeed if they did.

Up to you.
Here, I believe what Stoichkov & Scholes said
than what you said.
You can stick with your believe. 🙂

Zidane's 2001 Juventus vs Riquelme's 2003 Barcelona,
which season was worst?

We are talking about "flop" season.
Since people keep mentioning about
Riquelme's 2003 Barcelona as "flop season".

Zidane was in his fifth season at Juventus compared to Riquelme in his first, so circumstances are very different.

Riquelme came in, couldn’t prove himself, and was promptly shipped out again.

He was a fantastic footballer but a step below the elite players of the time - such as the guy who replaced him at Barcelona, Ronaldinho.

Which one was worst season?

Zidane 5th season
or Riquelme 1st & only season?

Zidane had a better season, it’s not even worth debating. He was the player Juventus built their team around (like every season he played at the club) and was the best foreigner in Serie A. He finished the season earning a world record transfer to Real Madrid.

Better season like below:

2001 Champions League
Group E Final Result:

1. Deportivo La Coruña (spain)
2. Panathinaikos (GREECE) 😄
3. Hamburg (germany) (this was not Hamburg 1983 version) 😄
4. Juventus 😄😄😄😄😄

Riquelme never did this.
His team never lose in group stage
in his entire career.
Zidane at least
had 2 times lose at group stage.
(This is a fact)

Cool.

Zidane still had a much better season in 2001 than Riquelme did in 2003, and if this is your argument, you might want to actually start watching football instead of reading Wikipedia.

Riquelme fans are very touchy, you see them on Twitter sometimes.

Used to be one on here years ago who was a bit off.

They don't like the fact he never had a sustained long successful career in Europe.
