" The sleeping giant in world football, you could say, is the nation of Portugal.

A smooth style and plenty of elegance is what their game is about, but they have been dormant in terms of performance on the world stage in recent years. Are they about to drop a bombshell on the rest of the world?

Not since the days of Eusebio in 1966 has Portugal performed up to their expectations at the World Cup, finishing a respectful third at that tournament. The truth is they have not seen any action on the world stage since 1986.

A strong squad with youth and experience, the team will be led by players such as Luis Figo, Fernando Couto, Vitor Baia, Nuno Gomes and Jorge Costa, to name a few.

Portugal, being a country with a strong league that does not usually show its true colors in European competitions, has the opportunity to show the world what they are truly about.

Figo, the playmaking midfielder, will be hoping to set the tone for his country when they line up at the World Cup. He was at one stage the player in the middle of a transfer saga from rival teams in Spain Barcelona to Real Madrid, attracting the largest transfer fee ever at the time.

Almost forgiven, but not forgotten by the Catalans, Figo has taken his new club team to great heights and now has the chance to also lift his nation to greater success. He will be the player to watch.

Portugal is grouped with co-hosts South Korea, the United States and Poland. The opening game for the Southwest-European team will see them face the United States and will take place on June 5 in the Korean city of Suwon.

Preparations for the tournament are nearing completion. Will Portugal defy the odds and become the next nation to claim the World Cup? "
